Gabe Newell: PS3 "a waste of everybody's time"
Valve boss fires another stinging salvo at Sony's console
Thursday 11-Oct-2007 12:21 PM [

Valve Software boss Gabe Newell has slagged off PS3 calling it "a waste of everybody's time" in a latest attack on the console.

"Investing in the Cell, investing in the SPE gives you no long-term benefits. There's nothing there that you're going to apply to anything else. You're not going to gain anything except a hatred of the architecture they've created", Newell told Edge magazine.

"I don't think they're going to make money off their box. I don't think it's a good solution."

It's not the first time Newell has slammed PS3. Earlier in the year he called it "a total disaster on so many levels... I think it's really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted".

"I'd say, even at this late date, they should just cancel it and do a do over", he said in January.

Despite his negative reactions to PS3, Newell says that he thinks PS3 owners who buy The Orange Box are going to be happy with their game experience and that EA - which is handling the PS3 version - will make it a good product.

"But I think it's harder to get it to the same standard as the 360 and PC versions", Newell said.

You can read Edge's full interview with Gabe Newell in its newly launched blog.

Yikes, I think the worst thing about this is the fact that EA is doing the Ps3 port of Orange Box and not Valve themselves.. that's gonna be painful.

He's going to look like a jackass in a year.

I mean like, more than he already does.

Didn't he say that a couple of months ago. I thought you were bringing up a old topic for a minute.

Oh yeah? Why is that?

Oh yeah? Why is that?

The PS3 software sales are going to beat at least the Wii's.

I think maybe you're misunderstanding his point.

If you click and read the full interview, you'll see his gripe is with the platforum and difficulty that devs have working with it. Basicly this quote from above sums it up

"Investing in the Cell, investing in the SPE gives you no long-term benefits. There's nothing there that you're going to apply to anything else. You're not going to gain anything except a hatred of the architecture they've created."

Everything they do and learn and the tools they create benefit only Ps3 development and nothing else.

At least, that's what I took away from the article.

I wonder why this guy is the only guy to really spout off on how ****ty the PS3 system architecture is. I mean, other companies have shown disapproval, but they don't draw media attention the way this guy does.

I'm sorry, but this guy doesnt hold any merit for me. He suggests that Sony cancel the PS3 and start over....okay, I understand that maybe he was being sarcastic or making some point, but even saying just THAT still makes him look like a dumbass.

Because he's both a programmer AND the head of a major developer. He's not some PR guy trying to be nice, he actually knows what he's talking about and he doesn't answer to anyone.

Makes sense. Ya know, in 2000 when people bitched and moaned about the PS2, they kinda had no choice since it was the first next-gen console available at the time, and its success was guaranteed.

But with the PS3 performing like AIDS, developers can just tell Sony to go **** themselves and stick with the 360, or make Solitaire or perhaps Minesweeper on the Wii.

Also: he's one of the smartest programmers out there.

It wasn't first.

True. I stand corrected.

The Dreamcast coming 2 years before the Xbox and Gamecube makes me forget that Sega's white wonder was in the same battle.

Well, instead, let me say that the PS3 is doing the worst of the 3, so a company whom considers developing for it to be a real bitch, they can easily jump ship.

GabeNewell"Xbox 360 Makes My Life Worse"

The latest issue of Computer Gaming World has an interview with Gabe Newell, Valve Software’s founder and managing director, in which the developer of Half-Life 2 and Counter-Strike discusses various topics including the release date of Aftermath, Lost Coast and Day of the Defeat Source.

Gabe also had time so discuss Windows Vista, the next-generation operating system from Microsoft due out late next year, and the Xbox 360.

"Look, I spoke to some people at Microsoft, and as I said, I can't point to a single feature in Vista that I care about that solves problems for us at all. And I had the same conversation with the Xbox 360 guys. It's like, Xbox 360 doesn't make my life any better, and in fact, it makes it a lot worse, as you're telling me I can't count on having a hard drive."
As you can see, Valve’s head honcho and former Microsoft employee isn’t happy about the fact that developers can’t rely on the Xbox 360 hard drive and he’s probably not the only developer who feels that way.

Make sure you pick up the latest issue of CGW, which hit stands next week. There are more interesting items in that interview, including Valve’s revelation that EA plans to offer a Steam-like service in the near future. :D

Hey osirus, he was talking about not having a hard drive, not that the 360 was a waste

Aphrodite

...No, he pretty clearly said the 360 was pointless, then added that the lack of HDD makes it even worse.

Where'd he say that at? I only saw this:
It's like, Xbox 360 doesn't make my life any better, and in fact, it makes it a lot worse, as you're telling me I can't count on having a hard drive."

In the bolded statement he's saying that just like Vista, the 360 offers nothing new to them.

Then in the italics he says that in fact, it's even worse.

However, what osirus failed to mention is that the interview is from 2005.

Also failed to mention what he said about the 360 in the current interview and how MS made the right choice with their hardware.
