Different people have different tastes, so it is a matter of trying different things until you find one that you like. Things like Jack are usually an acquired taste, if you drink it with coke and just sip it after a couple of weeks (not drinking too much) you'll start to really like the taste. Of course, if you have a really bad night of drinking way too much of it you may find it disgusting afterwards.

One of my favourites to get drunk off of is red bull and vodka. You can mix them nearly 50/50 and still not taste the vodka, plus the red bull keeps you energized. I find it almost too easy to drink. 4 cans of red bull and an entire bottle of vodka in 20 minutes isn't the best idea...

I find it almost too easy to drink. 4 cans of red bull and an entire bottle of vodka in 20 minutes isn't the best idea...Been there, done that, but with Monster instead. I think it was only about half a bottle though. Still not great end results. =) I remember being amazed at not tasting the vodka, but I wasn't exactly sober when I started drinking it. Later found that Monster is actually pretty gross while sober, though the orange kind with the right vodka might be okay. DEFINITELY true what you say about it keeping you energized. Alcohol usually puts me to sleep, but mixing in an energy drink keeps me going.

Another one I've liked is tequila + squirt. That was surprisingly good. Aftershock is also really good if you like cinnamon, but that stuff will kick your ass. That's probably my favourite one. Has a really strong flavour but it doesn't taste alcoholic. Vodka plus Gatorade isn't bad either, and it seems to prevent hangovers the next day.

Probably the worst ones I've had are Ice 101 (my friend really needs to quit buying that) and a 7 and 7. That's 7 Up and something else that I have no idea. Oh yeah, and Everclear jello shots. Gross. Also if you want a rum and Coke but have no Coke, rootbeer is not an adequate subsitute. Trust me on that one.

I've never had Grey Goose. Was around it once, but they said I was too inexperienced to appreciate it so I wasn't allowed to have any. >:|

One of these days I'm going to buy one of those books with a whole bunch of drink mix ideas in it. I think that'd be a lot of fun to try. Wish I knew a bartender or something.

I don't really drink to get drunk because I just think thats a stupid idea. But I had some Plum Sake the other night which was pretty good. Not sure how much alcohol it had, but I'm sure you can find some strong sake somewhere. The brand I had was Gekkeikan, it was really good on ice cream. Or better yet, if you can, get a hold of some Beamish Irish beer. I've never been able to find any, but Don "The Dragon" Wilson thinks its worth fighting over. Seriously, he made a movie where he stole some Beamish and guys were after him the whole movie trying to kill him. Any beer worth killing over has got to be legendary.

I don't know if you're specifically looking for liquor but I've always preferred beer. Try these:

Sam Adams Summer Ale
Blue Moon Pale Ale
Rolling Rock
Tsingtao

Here's some combinations and spirits I find to be especially tasty:

Sailor Jerry Rum and Coke: Tastes really sweet, similar to bubble gum.

Captain Morgan and Sprite: Just like Cream Soda, wonderful.

Rain Vodka (http://www.rainvodka.com/pages/Rain.html) and Anything: Yeah there's a link, because almost nobody has even heard of it. But Rain Vodka makes without a doubt the best Screwdrivers ever. I hated Screwdrivers (Orange Juice and Vodka) until I had it with this vodka. Try it also with Mountain Dew, or Cranberry Juice, or anything really.

Ice 101 is not as bad as Kat makes it seem, but there is a strong peppermint schnapps called Rumple Minz that is very tasty, and will clear your sinuses in an instant.

If you want whiskey, my personal favorite has become Maker's Mark. It is one of the few liquors where I have ever noticed a pleasant aftertaste as opposed to a revolting one. Evan Williams is also good. Jack Daniel's is without a doubt the poor man's whiskey, haha.

However, if all you have is JD...chase or mix it with some Cherry Coke, not regular. The combination is ridiculously sweet, and the Cherry Coke does a great job of getting rid of the whiskey burn.

As far as beer, I like Bud Light/Budweiser and Yuengling. I personally find Sam Adams to be a bit too bitter for my tastes, but that's all up to you.

This works best if you actually have a spirit that you like the taste of. As has previously been mentioned, Jack Daniels is an acquired taste. But you've got a whole host of spirits out there to try, such as Malibu (coconut), tequila (well, tequila, but I like the taste), white sambuca (aniseed), black sambuca (liquorice), and so on. You can try to acquire vodka and actually like it, but straight vodka tastes like death so I wouldn't recommend it. Then basically find a mixer that suites your favoured spirit(s).

Some of my personal favourites are:

Malibu and pineapple juice (call it a girl's drink all you want, because it probably is, but it tastes fantastic)

Vodka and orange (yes, I know vodka doesn't taste good, but with the right amount of orange juice it just gives it a bit of a kick)

Southern Comfort and Cranberry juice (I was only introduced to this a couple of years ago, but it is a fantastic drink. Try it)

and a 7 and 7. That's 7 Up and something else that I have no idea.

A 7 & 7 is 7UP and Segrams 7 Whiskey. I'm personally a fan of dark liquor, so I'm partial to these, as well as rum & coke or jack & coke. Whiskey Sours can also be tasty.

If you're looking for shots, there are three I personally recommend. A 3 wise men (Jack Daniels, Jim Beam and Jameson), a Lemon Drop (vodka, lemon & sugar) or a chocolate cake shot (Frangelico, which is a hazelnut liqueur, vanilla vodka, sugar and a lemon).

All in all, you just have to taste-test. The bars you go to will often have a house drink that can be pretty tasty. Just make sure you don't mix too many mixed drinks together in one night or you're be praying to the porcelain gods long into the morning. Then again, it's good to learn your limit early on.

I used to agree with the part about Vodka, but again, the Rain vodka I got shatters that belief.

It's that good, honestly.

I don't personally recommend going to bars to learn what you like, because bars are expensive, and they generally make their drinks pretty strong. It's not a good place to try and feel things out, because you have less if not no, control over your drinks.

Best to just go to a party and mix things up yourself, see what you like, and then go from there!

BTW, Kid_A, ever had a Four Horseman? ;)

Bein' the ragin' drunk that I am, I'm insulted by the fact that you don't like Jack Daniels :P

Seargram's Extra Dry Gin. I could go through SEVERAL bottles of that if my wallet could withstand it. Love everythin' by Seagram.

Jamie, you're refferin' to a Screwdriver (Vodka and orange juice). Very tasty, though I try to stay away from Vodka all together. I hate the stuff.

I'll drink most whiskeys. But whiskey is, as said before, an aquired taste.

Now if you want to talk about gettin' flat ass drunk, we'll talk about this little mixed drink called a Kentuck Sh!tkicker. Jack, Beam, Turkey, Goose.1/2 oz each. WONDERFUL.

Best tastin' alcohol I've had would either be Goldschlager or Long Island Ice Tea. Damn I love Ice Tea :P

I'm going to have to try some of these next week.

Been there, done that, but with Monster instead.

First things first. Green Monster is great while sober, if you want a carbonated beverage. Secondly, that wasn't vodka at all. It was Bacardi Hurricane. It's a $17 halfgallon of blue greatness. What it is: It's a pre-mixed drink already, that consists of Bacardi 151, and some other flavors that combine to make a blue drink. So you can actually drink it alone, with or without ANOTHER mix. But my friends and I have started mixing it with other things, our favorite being the Green Monster drink+ Bacardi Hurricane. It's a great mix if you wanna drink for cheap.

As far as vodka mixes go. I'm a vodka FANATIC. So I'd suggest mixing anything with it. If you mix the right amount to your own taking - you can't get it wrong. All the "mix these and that amounts" are really just for beginner ideas. Of course you can add more or less of certain things to suit your liking.

On another note, I've read NUMEROUS times that mixing energy drinks and alcohol can be fatal. Because the energy drink is designed to increase your heartrate, while alcohol decreases your heartrate. If someone would like to confirm this, it couldn't hurt him and everyone else to know.

I've never had Grey Goose. Was around it once, but they said I was too inexperienced to appreciate it so I wasn't allowed to have any. >:|

It's a $60 bottle of Vodka. There was no way in hell I was going to waste it. >_>

is grey goose any good???

I've seen a chart in a Maxim magazine that refered to over 50 vodkas. Greygoose was rated number one. If that answers your question. It's fairly expensive to drink, is the problem. However it does come in various flavors - Lemon being my favorite. You can mix it well with just about anything. Kool-aid or gaterade are primarily my two favorite mixees. Mostly cause there's just so many flavors of them already. And they have sugar, which helps give me energy to continue partying.

Hmmm speaking of Green... Absinth and red bull or V! I don't know if absinth is legal in the states yet.. It was only just legalized here a while ago. Pretty potent stuff, but IMO tastes very bitter and quite bad. Energy drinks cover its taste. It can be 60-80% alcohol, and has wormwood. There is a cocktail for it I tried called 'death in the afternoon', 60/40 champagne and absinth. Wow! that made me see weird stuff.

I've never heard that before.. If it were true, I would think that you wouldn't be able to buy mixers of energy drink and alcohol in bars, and drinks like pulse wouldn't exist due to safety reasons. I say its an urban myth.

190 Proof Absinthe is illegal in the States. There is a much weaker version though that is legal.

It's like Everclear is only legal in a handful of states. Mine is not one of them.

Also, for $60, you can get two or three bottles of Rain vodka, which, IMO is so good, you don't even need Grey Goose.

Yeah I know it's called a Screwdriver, but I don't tend to use the names of drinks when I'm just talking about a spirit and mixer. It doesn't feel right. So I'll order 'Vodka and Orange' rather than 'A Screwdriver', though I have no problem ordering 'A Tequila Sunrise' as opposed to saying 'Tequila, Orange Juice and Grenadine Syrup'. Tequila Sunrise is another one of my favourite drinks, by the way.

Absinthe is usually meant to be drunk clouded, Put a sugar cube on a fork and hold it over the Absinthe, pour some water over it and you'll get the clouded absinthe which tastes far better

You are wrong.

Absinthe (Alcohol)
The importation of Absinthe and any other liquors or liqueurs that contain Artemisia absinthium is prohibited.

That comes from the Customs and Border Protection website at CBP.gov.

However...

In 2007 the first legally available absinthe has been approved for sale in the US. These brands must pass TTB testing, which is an older standard and would appear to have a margin of error of around 10 mg/l thujone . Thus brands that are under the limit 'officially' don't contain thujone even if in actually they do. Two brands currently available are Lucid and Kübler, with more to come.

That's according to Wiki. Basically, there are two Absinthes that have now been legally allowed to be sold in the US, however, their proofs are 124 and 106, respectively. Neither is the 190 proof that is supposed to be available in Europe. My guess is with the new restrictions on thujone levels, the 190 proof versions would fail these tests, and thus still be illegal in the US.

I agree with that, actually. I had said "the bar" assuming that the poster had been drinking for a while and was of age to actually go to bars (also currently assuming he's from the US).
That being said, I feel like I should mention that I feel like there's really no need to drink before you're of age. Trust me. You're not missing anything exhilarating. And it gets old a lot faster if you start younger.

JoZ, I have not tried one of those. What's in it? Do you recommend one?

Yeah I know, i tried that method. I also tried the burning the sugar cube above water. I don't particularly like either, they are very bitter and have a strong taste. Which is why I tried red bull and V with it.

Get some Coke or sour mix the next time you have Jack. Start out like 70-30 and then just keep adding more of one or the other to find a good strength for you.

Grey Goose is expensive as hell, it's like $30 for a fifth.... Aristocrat is $15 a handle. It depends on how refined your tastes are... both taste like **** to me so I don't care, but Grey Goose is supposed to go down a lot smoother.

The JoZ
October 5th, 2007, 09:17 PM
Yeah but the problem is that Aristocrat is the second worst vodka you can buy, with only Bowman's being worse.

I must keep stressing my Rain vodka if you really want good vodka. Not as expensive as Grey Goose, and wonderful stuff.

If you need cheapish vodka though, at least go for Bacardi.

If you're mixing drinks is there really a difference between cheap, straight-from-a-gulag-toilet vodka and the premium stuff? It seems like whenever I drink vodka it's mixed and I can't tell the difference at all.

Other favorites I haven't seen yet include jungle juice (who doesn't love it?), White Russian (vodka, kahlua, milk, ice), Mudslide (vodka, kahlua, Bailey's), Kamakaze (vodka, triple sec, lime juice), Bullfrog (vodka, lemonade), Boilermaker (drop a shot of whiskey into a glass of beer), and anything Johnnie Walker. Whiskey and ginger ale is also pretty good.

Yes, there is.

The cheap stuff burns and is too strong. The premium stuff makes the drink drinkable.

I hated screwdrivers till I found Rain vodka. Now they are wonderful!

VPS' personal suggestion is top shelf fruit flavoured vodka and coke.

I have no idea why this works either. I wouldn't have expected coke to go well with kiwifruit vodka but it's actually really yummy.

As for the brand of Vodka - NZ made 42 below is the best. Although, I actually live at 43 degrees south.

Just in case you needed to know why it's the best:

"If you were going to pick the perfect environment to make to world's most perfect vodka you would have to pick New Zealand.

The water is clear and sweet, the air holds a standard for purity and hardly anyone is French."

heh ;)
