Funny, this is exactly why I prefer Warcraft. I liked its medieval theme much more than Starcraft's futuristic one.

I loved star craft when i found out they were making a new starcraft after

I think the answer to this question will depend largely on whether a person liked the Medieval or Futuristic theme more. Starcraft's reputation goes without saying, and it is still highly playable even today. Though Warcraft II is far more out dated, Warcraft III is a fine RTS and certainly still playable now.

In short, both are superb games, and it comes down to personal preference. Right now I'd say that I prefer Warcraft because of the superb third installment, but that could all change when the next Starcraft game arrives.

I prefer Starcraft, I didn't like the Hero aspect of WC3 that much, though for custom games you can do much much more with WC3.

Both are very well made RTS games though while warcraft is gathering dust starcraft is still a game I play through every couple of months.

I haven't played either game to a point of knowing it inside out, but I was under the impression that both games were almost exactly the same, besides the obvious time settings. Even the stories are pretty much identical.

What other differences are there?
