View Full Version : Band of the day Thread

Saw this work somewhere else so I'm curious if it would work here. Its more of a way to get people to find new bands, so try to post bands most people here will not have listened to. One post a day, post a ittle something about the band, maybe a video or something to give people a taste (I'd say put up a song or album on mediafire, megaupload, or yousendit, but I don't think that would be allowed.) If this isn't allowed, at least one or two bands will get in before this is closed.
Ok, I was going to start off with City of Caterpillar, but I decided these guys would be so much better. Its what Cap'n Jazz would sound like if they existed today (only better because Cap'n Jazz ****ing owns). Its emo at its purest, all over the place, and not much real singing, but I feel the sing/scream is much more emotional and raw feeling than anything else. I'd recommend picking up their demo.

This is what the recommendation thread in CE was suppose to be like, yet everyone always posts well known stuff.
I know they are quite well known, but Manchester Orchestra still isn't that big of a band. Not only do they make really good 'mellow' music, but the guys make hilarious podcasts all the time.
Their latest podcast: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsGtdt3R7ak&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fabsolutepunk%2Enet%2Fshowthread% 2Ephp%3Ft%3D248825

Neon Horse is a good band that not many people know about (probably because they are a new band). They have what I like to call a Weird Rock style, which sounds pretty cool to me. I really can't explain them all that well, since they don't really fit into a genre, so let their music (http://myspace.com/neonhorse) and their music video (http://youtube.com/watch?v=VTd_M_0mbVQ) do the talking.

Scott Walker isn't relatively known. He pretty much writes and plays a lot of different genres, but IMO his best is his out-of-this-world Avant Garde music that puts a chill down your spine (At least on the last album, which is the only one I own.)

Neon Horse is on T&N? Did not even know that, its interesting. They kinda got that Jonezetta dancey-feel to them. I could see myself liking this for a few listens but just not listening to it ever again. Can't say the same for Scott Walker though. I couldn't get past a few minutes, nothing was really happening and had nothing to pull me in

Yeah, their CD came out not too long ago, like a couple months back. I listened to them a few times and didn't think I would ever listen to it again, but the music grew on me after a few plays. You sort of have to listen a few times without liking it before you actually find that it is good.

I couldn't do it at first either. His music is not so much amazing as it is innovative. The disturbing sound he came up with is one of a kind.

If you can find a legitimate site (ie: the band's own, MySpace, Pure Volume, etc.) where the band has an endorsed download. You can share information that people could otherwise find themselves by doing an info search on the band essentially. You cannot post links to a dropbox, torrent, or other file sharing method.

Ok well the artist I chose today was Dax Johnson and you have probably hear me talk about him before, but I must mention him again because he is so amazing. Pretty much he plays piano music full of emotion and IMO I have never heard anyone who has put this amount of emotion in their music. He has a couple instrumental albums, which are the best IMO, and one vocal album, which is okay. The best thing to do when listening to his music is to think about a good memory that you had when you were REALLY young. At the end of most of his songs it makes you miss the memory so much that it is crazy. Anyways here is his myspace link:

I know that there are a couple people on gamewinners who listen to HammerFall. But anybody that likes powermetal should check them out.
HammerFall's Myspace (http://myspace.com/hammerfall) I would listen to Hearts on Fire or Blood Bound. Hearts on Fire is probably their best song, and if you like it you should check out Crimson Thunder. My favorite and probably thier best album. If you didn't like any of the songs on there I would still check out thier first two albums, Glory to the Brave and Legacy of Kings because those are more like 'eighties metal' as Hammerfall says on their website.

My BOTD is Edaline. This album is how midwest emo is supposed to be played. Hard and emotional with well placed yells. It sounds like a precursor to what the majority of the world incorrectly deems 'screamo.' But that shouldn't keep you from listening to it. All I listen to is emo and real screamo and this album has really struck a chord with me, its that good.

They are an experimental/progressive band from Texas who write all instrumental music. This band is Zombi. They're an instrumental prog/space rock band that consists of only 2 guys on drums and bass. Both members also handle synth duties. Imagine Moving Pictures era Rush, now remove Alex Lifeson's guitar and Geddy's vocals from the mix, and throw in lots more synths and you have Zombi. Another funny thing about this band is that they're signed to Relapse Records, which is known for its more heavy and brutal bands.

Anyways my bad for today is Summoning. They are a pretty good black metal band that I would expect some people on here to know. Anybody who likes Windir will like this band. This is easily one of my favorite black metal bands and anyone who is interested int hem should go buy their album Minas Mogul.

Band of the Week: Covin
A small punk to modern rock band from Hartford, CT, Covin embodies what I believe to be the best punk-rock sound I've heard in a while. Cohesive, heavy, and retains its pop sensibilities at all times. They really know how to make good songs, whether its a great slower song like "Still Too Late", or a really fast, heavy one like "Too Hot to Breathe", or a delightfully Misfits-esque tune such as "Grave Baby", about a dude's girlfriend who comes back to life.
Such a great band, and really worth everyone's time:

It's pretty hard to give a good description of this band. Think Indie rock with NWOBHM influences, and sometimes having a strange aversion to sounding like the soundtrack to a Beverly Hills Cop fight scene, and all while being completely instrumental ( with the exception of 3 or 4 songs). I've heard them be described as "Adventure Music", which is simply the best label I've heard for them. Also, another good description would be to take The Minibosses (video game cover band) and imagine if they did originals. That's what they'd sound like. Oh yeah, there's no bass player either, but in this band no one would probably notice.

Kinda like Explosions in the Sky and if you're into post rock you've probably listened to them. But because their new album is coming out soon, thought I'd throw them in here. They aren't a post-rock band that really explores boundaries, but they are like EITS and really really good at just putting their emotions on the table through straight-forward rocking.

This is supposed to be bands nobody has heard of right? Well I've heard of Coheed and Cambria, and Avenged Sevenfold...
I think I'll go with icelandic acoustic/blues artist Lay Low, found her on a CD I got at the radio station I work at, it was an icelandic artist collection, really good stuff. Anyway, her song "Mojo Love" is what got me addicted. Its got a simple sound to it, but it brings some emotion along with it, kinda calms you down. I recommend her album "Please Don't Hate Me", her myspace is right here: http://www.myspace.com/baralovisa
If your not really for the whole blues/folk, you could try out Bromheads Jacket, which were featured in Burnout Paradise, they have a great alternative sound, and an english accented vocalist with some really meaningful songs. I recommend their album "Dits from the Commuter Belt" and more importantly, their song "Poppy Bird" and "Wooley Bridge"
Myspace at: http://www.myspace.com/bromheadsjacket
And for some odd reason all the good videos are gone off Youtube, but you can find Poppy Bird on their myspace.
Oh, and I really like Lower Case Noises, really ambient stuff, got a creepy feel to it, but its centered, the guy knows what he wants to do, knows what he's going for, so thanks for that He.Is.Legend
I didn't really like Street Smart Cyclist though, they didn't seem that original.
Manchester Orchestra was pretty good, they remind me of Death Cab for Cutie except for they aren't sold out.
Neon Horse sounds like the mixture of Murder By Death and The White Stripes, they're okay
Scott Walker had an interesting feel, but it seems like he kinda lost his vibe after the first riff.
The Wedding was way too poppy and emo for me, sorry.
Dax Johnson is probably really good at what he does, but I'm not a huge fan of that kind of music
Edaline almost reminded me of Nirvana with the mumbling in the beginning of Coma Star , but then they found their sound after the first song. I don't typically go for this kind of music but its pretty good.
Alright I am done for now, I'm like half a page down and I actually gotta get off my ass and do stuff.

Pretty much the opposite for me. I adore MCR (guitar solos, multiple song stylings, concept albums, everything ftw), can't effing stand Mindless Self Indulgence.
Every hipster idiot at my school wears their shirt, and I listened to one song by them, and instantly loathed EVERY HIPSTER IDIOT AT MY SCHOOL.
Also, call me shallow, but The Classic Crime is really, really, really bad. My friends are fans of them, and when I listen to a song, I'm like, "This sounds like a bad mix between Panic and Fall Out Boy, mixed with minor chords. Wow, what a UNIQUE COMBINATION."
Naw, for my money, THIS BAND (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=47321218&MyToken=561e8020-e5ab-4057-9c00-d9c073d918d2) is one of the best. I'm talking about Streetlight Manifesto, my friends. Pretty much my favorite post-third wave ska band of all time (since Less Than Jake IS Third Wave), SM combines fantastic, grandiose song structure with some of the best lyrics I've heard out of any band, unexpectedly a ska band.
Just listen to "We Will Fall Together." I'm pretty sure that's the first song I've ever heard that used brass chords to such a degree that it was haunting. And using only in-band musicians. Tomas Kalnoky is one of the more talented composers I've ever heard, and his voice is cool too.

[QUOTE=Saint!;7914299]That's the problem, no band can be judged by one song./QUOTE]
True enough (didn't see this until now)
But, I dunno, they seem much too...similar to a lot of bands.
Not exactly bad, just not exactly original. I'll admit, some of MCR's stuff isn't so incredibly original, but "The Black Parade" was a great album and I haven't heard a lot of other "emo" (I use the term loosely because A: I've been told by Emo fans they aren't emo, and B: I don't consider them Emo, I just don't) bands do some of the weird stuff I've heard on that album.
His voice is pretty annoying, but you get used to it, and the drumming and guitar work in the band is pretty great, at least from my perspective.
Plus, they're one of the only popular (by that, I mean really mainstream mainstream) bands I like. I feel like, if I can like MCR, I'm not a complete snob.
And with them, there's a certain...theatrical quality to a lot of their songs I enjoy. Grandiose, a bit melodramatic sometimes but I don't mind. They're like Queen, with alt rock replacing Freddy Mercury's epic awesomeness.
While this argument is overused, I'll say it anyway: I just dig their sound, always have. Something just clicks, I say, "Hm, that's a good band," and I like them. I won't say I can't explain it (I just did), just that even if you disagree with my previous opinions, I provide the one inalienable defense for myself.
Also, my band of the day is Rancid (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=5932141). Just follow this link, I doubt further explanation is necessary. They're just great.
Unfortunately, they don't have my favorite album's songs on there, or even my favorite song off the album they're currently promoting (look up "White Knuckle Ride" sometime, amazing bass work), but definitely still worth looking up.

Their full-length debut was well received by both independent music review sites such as punknews.org (Sink or Swim review, Absolutepunk.net (profile and review), and Racket Magazine (interview), and more mainstream sites such as Spin.com (Band of the Day) in August 2007, UltimateGuitar.com (album review)and a feature on FuseTV's Dozen Days of Downloads in January 2008.
Their sound is recognizably New Jersey, one of the band's acknowledged heroes and influences Bruce Springsteen and their driving punk owe a great deal to the New Brunswick hardcore scene and acts such as The Bouncing Souls. The Gaslights Anthem's influences go beyond New Jersey and punk and pay homage to acts from Tom Waits to Wilson Pickett and Joe Strummer, who was the subject of the track "I'da Called You Woody, Joe," the band's second single and video from Sink or Swim.
Videos include the band's first single, "Drive" as well as "I'da Called You Woody, Joe" from their debut album Sink or Swim as well as a video for the song "The '59 Sound" from the album The '59 Sound.
The Gaslight Anthem has been on tour throughout 2007 and continuing through 2008, supporting Against Me!, The Loved Ones, and The Draft.
A follow-up EP titled Seņor and the Queen via Florida's Sabot Productions was released on February 6, 2008. A 7" vinyl version was also released in limited Red (500 copies) and White (100 Copies).
Although still relatively obscure outside of the US, the August 6, 2008 band made British music history after they became the first band to ever grace the cover of Kerrang! magazine, the UK's number one selling rock weekly, without Kerrang! magazine having previously written a single word about them. Kerrang! called them "The best new band you'll hear in 2008". [1] In addition, the band has received airplay on BBC6 Music.
The band's second full-length album, titled The '59 Sound, was released on August 19, 2008. Hot Water Music's Chris Wollard and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones's Dicky Barrett are guests on the album.
