I just downloaded the patch for FM 2007 to update the players and had a manual search for good young players, and there are loads! There are at least 10-15 absolute wonder kids out there under the age of 19 who could fit into most teams. Amazing. I'm sure there weren't that many before the update.

Names, please? Gareth Bale and Atletico Mineiro's Renato are two good young players that I can name that were already good before the database update.

I wasnt sure about this, I recently did a lot of youth scouting and found some real talented players that I texted to my friend but he doesnt have the patch and said some of them were really unimpressive.
But as Acid said names would be nice

Ok, here's a list, along with value and/or how much you can buy them for. I haven't bought most of them, and as such can't vouch for their practical worth, but the stats are just exceptional.
First, players that I have not yet bought:
1) Said Mehamha (15), DM/AM(C), compensation is £475,000
2) Nathan Porrit (16) AM(R/L), compensation is £1.1mil (not amazing stats, but good values in key stats such as dribbling, passing, pace and creativity)
3) Nuri Sahin (17) DM, value is just over £4mil, but his stats are just stunning.
4) Javi martinez (17) DM, exactly like Sahin but his stats are not quite as good.
5) Jonathan de Guzman (18), AM(R/C), value is £3.7mil
6) Marcelo (18) D/WB/AM (L), £5mil value, though I have it on good authority that he becomes world class star.
7) Anderson (18) AM(C), £5.5 mil value, SAF probably bought him just based on his stats in this game
8) Kevin Mirallas (18) AM/F (R/C), £4mil value
9) Sebastien Pocognoli (19) D/WB/AM L, can be bought for £725k
Second, players that I have bought:
1) Nani AM(R/L/C), £6.5mil, cheaper in this game and stats not quite as good, but seems to be just as effective.
2) Anthony Vanden Borre D/M/DM (R/C), £2.5, as with Nani
3) Jeremy Daouk AM (C), £140k, 15 year old with some excellent key stats. Don't yet know how he turns out.
4) Vincent Degre GK, £150k, 16 year old, again with some good key stats.
5) Marouane Fellaini D(C), DM, 18 year old with good stats, costs £1 million
6) Luka Modric AM (R/L/C), £1.5 million, 20 years old and there will be a bidding war over him between big clubs. I got him and he is excellent.
Try some of those out.

I bought (actually on a freebie) Degre before the patch, he was already good. Maybe you're just searching a little harder after you updated...

Possibly, though I always go through the same process of searching for good young players before I start any game, and simply didn't find that many before the patch.

Some guys in addition to Jamies list:
1. Benoit Costil, Caen, GK, Can go for anything between 10k to 500k, his ratings vary but on some occasions he's world class
2. Ezequiel Garay, Racing, SW DC, I paid 2.5m for him and god is he worth it, defends well and scores more goals (Free kicks imparticular) than many attackers
3. Marc Valiente, Barcelona, DC DM, Often available on loan or for around 1.5m, plays very well
4. Carlos Garcia, Almeria, DC, Very good centre half for under a million, can get capped very quick
5. Lulinha, Corinthians, AMC, Outstanding ratings, cost 350k dont know exactly how good he is as he's still in my reserves
6. Rafinha, Gelsenkirchen, D/WB R, The new Cafu, price varies not the cheapest but well worth the money
7. Pontus Wernbloom, IFK, DM, Excellent battling midfielder for 400k

Well, I've checked Jamie's list in my game saved on the old database. Out of those, the only ones I was interested in buying (besides Degre) were Vanden Borre and Modric. Fellaini didn't even exist. So, yeah, I guess they improved the youngsters DB.
Since we're naming names, these are some from before the patch:
1. Renato MRC (Atlético Mineiro): He's 20 turning 21 when the game begins, but if you wait until 2009, Atlético doesn't renew his contract and you can get him for £900k compensation. Won't get a work permit, though.
2. Gareth Bale DL (Southampton): 17 and becomes world class. A monster at set pieces, and has excellent physical levels. I paid £2.9m in 2009, he's probably cheaper before.
3. Garry Bocaly DRC,DM (Marseille): 18 years old, and has massive physical stats, besides being great at tackling. Also becomes world class. Again, only got him in 2009, and for a pricy £6m, but I'm sure that at the begining he was cheaper
4. Hans van der Linden AMC,FC (PSV): 16 and becomes a monster. I got him in 2008 for a compensation of £900k, since his contract was running out.
5. Sherman Cárdenas AMRC (Bucaramanga): 17, terrific technical skills. His value is high, but Bucaramanga didn't renew his contract and he was free released, so I got him for free. Also won't get a work permit.
6. Salomon Kalou AMRLC,FC (Chelsea): 21. He might be pricy because he is a Chelsea player but he's versatile and contrary to real life, can cross quite well. He has great key atributes and is a very good player, averaging one MoM every 10 games. The best of this list. I didn't buy him, he came with Chelsea.
7. Vitor AMC (Sporting): 18 years old. Vitor needs serious physical training, so you might need to do a schedule only for him, but he already has great technical and mental skills, so you can lower those bars in order to improve strenght and aerobics. If you're able to improve his pace, stenght and natural fitness, he becomes a very valuable player. He was free released by sporting in 2008, so I got him on a freebie.
8. John Obi Mikel MC (Chelsea): He's 19 when the game starts, and his stats improve until he's 21. You do need to adjust his training favouring techincal skills. If you do, he'll become a great player. If you don't, he'll become a great candidate to the transfer list.

Fellaini is definitely spelt right. Perhaps he's one of those randomly generated players, though they don't tend to pop up until a few years in.
Have just gone through donpaulo's list, and Garay certainly looks like an exciting prospect.

By the way, I searched defensive midfielder on Google and this site came up:

Fellaini and Vanden Borre played in the U-21 championship. Good players.
De Guzman seems like a great talent aswell, saw him a few times while playing for Feyenoord

2 more have cropped up on my game last night and I'm pretty sure their both real players (well I know the first is)
Serdar Tasci, Stuttgart, DC DM, His ratings are excellent I'm in the 4th season and currently trying to sign him on the bosman so I'm unsure how much you would normally pay, one downside is my scout mentioned he's injury prone.
Vincent Acapandie, Auxerre, SC, Looks blinding very young and scoring goals again I'm trying him on the bosman so I'm unsure as to how much you would pay

What does SC stand for?

I think it's 'Striker Centre', though was taken out for 2007, because Strikers only play in the centre.

I paid more then £22m for Rafael van der Vaart, and he's worth every penny. Look at this screenshot. This is updated, btw.

That's mightily impressive. I was going to buy him because he's been so good in the past games, but didn't think he'd be as good in this game. Clearly I was wrong.

Maybe I missed out, he came up on the bosman and he went to Barca who are hardly using him, could still steel him again
