I'm going back and RE-reading the whole series and for my first re-read of WoT it was incredibly revealing.

Obviously seeing Siuan and Moiraine raised as Aes Sedai and then later Moiraine meeting Lan and discovering the Black Ajah and all that was very exciting, even knowing what was going to happen beforehand it was fun to see the backstories to some less familiar characters and to see the more human side of the harder characters we meet later. I'm always surprised at how deep he brings the characters.

It makes me more curious about Cadsuane in later books... I can't remember specifically what Min saw about her in later books. Like is it still possible that she's Black Ajah or is she one of the Aes Sedai who is in Rand's hand? I remember who she is, but I guess I didn't pay enough attention to entertaining the possibility that she might Black.

The mention of Elyas is cool, just a little something thrown in there to enjoy.

Overall, very revealing... I originally read this between books 6 and 7, so I look forward to seeing how this effects the reading of Eye of the World again :)

i'll comment on NS later, but if you are reading EotW, i recommend the young adult version. it has an extra prologue that tells you more about the children from Emond's Field

Hah. I read New Spring first, because I have a PDF version of the first 10 WoT books, and it was crammed right before EotW in there. Needless to say, I hardly understood anything. Guess I'll reread it again now that I'm on the 7th or 8th book.

Yeah, I'm not sure if I'd have been a believer in the series if I had read New Spring to begin with... it definately has a feeling of incompleteness, but not really such a compelling finish that I have to know what's going on next... although it's hard to really know what I'd have though, purely hypothetical.

I think that it would have ruined the unfolding of the quest... y'know it's sort of a mystery in EotW as to whether or not Moiraine is a friend of Emond's Fielders or not and what she really wants with the boys and all that. That was one of the most compelling things about Eye of the World to begin with.

I don't think it ruined anything. Then again, all I remember from New Spring is someone's death at the end, and how different Moiraine and Lan were in the rest of the series. It was a huge contrast, to say the least.

Yeah, the differences of the two characters are actually kind of a treat going back and reading after reading the rest, and it actually plays out a lot like a comedy... it works very well if treated as a prequel. The other things that happen, however, is that we find out that Moiraine is searching for the Dragon Reborn, who was born on Dragonmount... so that kinda spills the beans.

Something else occurred to me yesterday when I re-started Eye of the World... are Moiraine and Rand cousins?

distantly, yet not as distant as he and elayne are.

i believe it is only by law/marriage and not by blood.

another thing to realize:
isam and "lord luke" are slayer. luke is rand's uncle. isam is lan's cousin. if you want to stretch it, then rand is related to lan too :link:
