Anything technical enough to get a genre name just for being technical, probably sounds bad. You can only have so much odd timing signatures before your music sounds un organized and as if you DON'T know anything about time signatures.

AS for LOG's genre, who really gives a f*ck? Why would you even go back and forth about that, you're arguing over something that can't be proven, lol

I take it you don't listen to necrophagist, gorod, pitbulls in the nursery, psycroptic, psypheria, etc. very much. The only band that comes close to what you describe is meshuggah. I can only stand so much of their music before it starts sounding the same.

Oh, and technicality doesn't mean "odd time signatures". You can be technical as hell while staying in the basic 4-4...

I meant technical time signatures, not technical playing. If I recall thats what he defined mathcore as, or something. And I have listened to Necrophagist, they were my favorite band for a couple months, I wouldn't call their timing odd though, really it's just a lot of riffs. But other bands, like Converge, it doesn't sound like there is any time signature, therefore in my opinion don't need yet another genre name.

Also my wording sometimes comes off as ranting or with a negative vibe, but im not trying to. I just like debating

I like complex time signatures, personally, not all of the time, but it makes things very interesting if the right band is doing it. Born of Osiris has the weirdest time scales and I think they are amazing.

How is creating imaginary tours, basically the "best of" of people's ipod collections, better than talking about actual music...?

Because it's interesting to see what some people's choices would be.

I always like imagining band switch arounds. But not your typical "dream line-up" im talking a full band, with different vox.

For example, Pantera, with All That Remain's lead singer [fergot his name]

I don't like piecing together whole bands because it is too much variation and you can never get an idea of what it will sound like

The Cerdog Tour

Touring: UK, US, Europe, others tbc

Duration: 2 days

Day 1

Metallica
Trivium
Rammstein
Lamb of God
Megadeth
Disturbed
Slipknot (I don't care whether or not you consider them metal)
Sepultura
Strapping Young Lad
Slayer

Day 2

Opeth
Dream Theater
Alice in Chains
Dragonforce
Iron Maiden
Children of Bodom
Joe Satriani
Steve Vai
Paul Gilbert/Racer X
McFly Bullet for my Valentine

Day 1 is not necessarily better than day 2, but I kept the louder, more agressive metal for the first day and the second has more progressive stuff for the most part.

Pandemic Joe

I like that idea.

Hmmm, here are some that I'd like to hear:

Mercyful Fate with the vocalist of Killwhitneydead.
Iced Earth with the vocalist of Kataklysm.
Nile with Dani Filth on vocals.
Suicide Silence with Dez Farara of DevilDriver on vocals.

Kai Hansen in Helloween... oh wait :(

I think it would be cool to see what Tobias Sammet (Edguy, Avantasia) could do in a lot of bands, but I'd really like to see him try out some Gamma Ray stuff. He's a great singer and though Kai Hansen is great and fits their music, I thought it would be interesting to hear Tobias.

I would love to see what Visceral Bleeding's Martin Pedersen could do if he replaced James Lee as Origin's vocalist. One of the fastest DM vocalists i've ever heard paired with the most technical/brutal/fast bands alive...

Pandemic Joe
November 5th, 2008, 06:20 PM
I think it'd make Origin quite a bit even better to have Martin Pedersen at the helm, that's a good call. His voice is not just fast, but also very distinct, and Origin's playing is just face melting.

I swear, the Origin drummer can kick out the beats about a million miles an hour.

That's a very tough call. They play two completely different styles of music (ok, maybe not COMPLETELY different). We've already had a discussion similar to this in the past with a Tomas Haake (meshuggah) vs. extreme drummers debate. It basically came out as haake being amazing at what he does (polyrythms with insanely consistant tempos) and extreme drummers like derek roddy doing what they do (blast beats faster than your mind can comprehend).

With that being said, Mauro Mercurio (hour of penance) > every other drummer ever. He's also better than anyone who's ever touched anything with a stick.

Hour of Penance on Myspace (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=14084135)

The default "Litergy of Deceivers" song that plays is a pretty good representation of his speed, especially the double-bass present throughout the song, and especially around the 0:49 mark in the background.

I'm disappointed they don't have "Drowned in the Abyss of Ignorance" on there, since it has one of the longest/consistant/fastest double bass sections i've ever heard around 1:53. If i can find some time, i'll upload a .WAV or .mp3 of that section somewhere.

Are any of you going to any shows anytime soon? I got my ticket to Symphony X at the Trocadero in Philly on the 22nd, and my sister got me a ticket to Dragonforce's show with Powerglove and Tourisas supporting on the 30th at the Electric factory in Philly.

This'll be the most concerts I've been to in one month.

If you've never heard of Exodus or Kreator you are missing out on essential thrash albums. I would reccomend the only albums I have by them Bonded By Blood (Exodus) and Extreme Aggression (Kreator).

As for HammerFall, I started with Chapter V: Unbent, Unbowed, Unbroken, but I would suggest Crimson Thunder. It has arguably their most popular song Hearts On Fire, as well it's their most rounded album. Their first 3 (and some parts of the 4th) albums are great power metal albums, and the 5th and 6th (and again some parts of the 4th) are more Heavy Metal oriented. The thing I will say is that HammerFall isn't a band that I got into my first listen. Every time I listen to them I like it more, but at the start I didn't like a ton of songs and now I like most of them.

Order of albums to get:
Crimson Thunder
Legacy Of Kings
Glory To The Brave
Chapter V: Unbent Unbowed Unbroken - if you like this one then go with:
Threshold - if you like the others get:
Renegade

When I saw them they were quite good. I just don't see a point in seeing them again. Obviously they'll have an extended setlist (from the 5 or so songs at Mayhem Fest) but I imagine much of it will be from the new album, which can't compare to the first three.

I loved how a few years ago at Rocksilde I believe it was, they played after Megadeth, and through their whole set the crowd was chanting Megadeth.

But yes, I do have to agree, their nothing to write home about

Spiner202

Speaking of Megadeth...

Last night, for the first time, I listened through all of the Peace Sells album (except 1 track, I didn't have time) and I have to say that it's actually a good album. Dave's voice usually drives me insane, but there isn't a ton of singing on this album, and the riffs on some of these songs (Wake Up Dead) are just amazing. Still I remember when I listened to Rust In Peace and I thought it was terrible outside of Hangar 18 and Tornado of Souls.

Legendaryking6
November 22nd, 2008, 12:41 AM
The title track from Rust In Peace was pretty damn good. Although Dave's an exceptional guitarist (he could shred circles around hammet or hetfield anyday), he really should stick to just playing guitar. His voice can be downright horrible at times.

Also, I heard Megadeth's live shows suck, that Dave gives little to no crowd interaction and usually tells the crowd "You came here to see us play, not to hear us talk".

Welcome aboard! ACDC aren't really that metal, but Metallica is. If you like Metallica, I would suggest to dig a bit deeper into metal. For example an album like Number Of The Beast (by Iron Maiden) or Blizzard of Ozz (by Ozzy Osbourne) are both great metal albums. Number Of the Beast is probably at it's best around the middle of the album (and the last song) and Blizzard of Ozz has a great beginning (and some very underrated tracks at the end).

The same can be said about Clutch. They kick ass. I also got to see Graveyard BBQ on the 30th at Katmandu in Trenton and even got to hop up on stage and sing one of their songs with them (their cover of Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap).
