View Full Version : Slur question

So I had a member say "gay", but the context it was in wasn't in any negative way, as in "I'm not that gay" (not attracted to the same sex). I went ahead and told her to use different phrasing, but I'm not sure how this falls under the slur rule.
Any help would be hot.

Thats normally a warning with chances of Temp ban. Am I right?
Just for using the word without it meaning happy.

You can use words like gay if it is a factual statement used in a non-derogatory manner:
ie: Elton John is gay / homosexual.
There's still some discretion on this. If someone said "Elton John is a homo," that might be would be worth at least a strong (logged) caution, depending on context.
And the alternate meanings excuse rarely flies. Quit being a cigarette.

Unless you happen to be English and said something like 'I went out and smoked a ***' since this is a use of English colloqiual language

But why would you post that in the first place? The Yanks wouldn't have a clue what you were about.
And I'm convinced there's some Freudian meaning to the appropriation of a word meaning 'a bundle of sticks' to mean 'homosexual'.
"Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar." Eh?

This rule is always confusing. I get asked clarification on it every few weeks or so by members.
Can't we just make it a rule that you can't use the word "gay" or anything like it unless you yourself are gay?

Well then that kind of puts all those who are gay at a higher level than those who are not, wouldn't you say? Anyways, I could claim I'm homosexual, engage in seductive IM's with you, and even send you pictures of my wang, but still not be.
But that's neither here nor there, what I'm really asking for is whether or not saying, "I'm not that gay" is a warnable offense, or just the same as saying," Elton John is gay".

As it stands now, it depends on how he meant gay. If he means "I'm not that homosexual" (which is probably a lie by the sound of it), then it's fine. If he means "I'm not that lame/stupid/whatever" then it's a warning for him.

But that's not what's important. You've had plenty of sexual conversations with me, but not once have I been shown your penis. I am outraged!
