So I begin my blog here on GW with one thought in mind: to complain about how crappy the medical system is here in the bustling metropolis that is Casper, Wyoming (a.k.a. Hick Town, USA). Please enjoy, and don't ridicule the crappy pun that is the title of my blog.
So these past two weeks have been torture on me. I have had agonizing pain in the right of my jaw, and I'm about fed up with the medical "professionals" who can't seem to figure out what my problem is. It started when I went to a dentist, who said that nothing should be wrong, and couldn't explain the pain I was feeling. That night, I was in excruciating pain, and I was taken to the ER, where another doctor could not explain to me my problems. Instead he just threw a Vicodin prescription at me and sent me on my way. Two days later, I went and had X-rays done, and they told me that it was my wisdom tooth that was coming in, and that it would have be surgically removed, along with the other three. So, the next day I went to a different dentist, who shot me with more radiation and said it couldn't be my wisdom teeth. Finally, last night, they finally seemed to figure out that I have an infected saliva gland. Of course, they threw some more drugs at me (Augmentin and Percocet), and soon that will heal up, just in time for that second dentist to rip out those wisdom teeth, because he still feels they're gonna be problematic soon. While that may be true, I'm still a little ticked about this whole ordeal. The medical world just gave me a Merry Christmas!

So now that I have basically healed up from my wonderful escapade, I finally dig into my Christmas presents, ready to play with my new stuff. Unfortunatly for me, you can't play with giftcards. So I went, and I bought myself a brand new iPod. It's a white iPod Video, and already I've loaded a bizillion songs, three games, and several episodes of South Park onto it. I love it, save for the short battery life (I think I wasn't very lucky in this aspect, as the battery life is shorter than what the manual says it should be when brand new).
Also included in my gifts were several articles of clothing, three DVDs (Cars, The Da Vinci Code [yuck], Pirates 2), and two DS games (Kirby: The Squeak Squad, Brain Age). It was a wonderful Christmas, save for that nasty saliva gland infection.

So, if you know your geography, you know that Casper is pretty close to Denver. And if you know your current events, you know they jkust got pounded with a nasty blizzard. Well, so did we, only it wasn't as bad. But we still got snow, and I hate snow. Too cold. Well, a second storm is beginning, just as bad as the first. I'm sitting with snow up to my eyeballs, freezing my ass off. Someone wanna send me their parka? Well, that's all for now.
Hey, what do ya know, this is my 4900th post. Yay.

So it is the last hours of 2006, and I reflect on the year behind. I got my first car, my first, second and third job, met many people and wasted half my free time on GW! Such a wonderful year! But now is that nasty moment when I have to think, "Kurtis, wtf is your New Year's resolution gonna be this year?" knowing full well that it will probably fail by then end of the week anyways. One that I always make but usually break very soon (I once broke this resolution in only an hour! Talk about will power) is to not drink soda. I don't know why, but it's always fun to see how long I can go with out my caffine fix. Another is one that many have: to lose weight, even though I probably don't need too. I think I need to just try to get my muscle mass up. The one thing this year I will try to do is try to eat less fast food. I eat it nearly every day, and it's getting out of hand, fiscally and medically. I can feel my arteries clogging with Taco Bell's nacho cheese. Wish me luck with my endeavors.

So I got two of my articles I've written for the school paper (as I am one of the copy editors of the great Kelly Kall), and I thought I would post them in here. Tell me what you guys think.
Article One:
Trojan fights for life
Student Melissa Berg battles against a life threatening disease
By Kurtis Butler – copy editor
On July 17th, Kelly Walsh sophomore, Melissa Berg, was diagnosed with a life threatening disease called autoimmune hepatitis.
Melissa Berg, 15, was a normal teen until then. She was an honors student, played soccer for the Casper Blades and was musically enthused; being a pianist and violist. It wasn’t until recently that she was hit with this deadly disease.
“I couldn’t believe it happened to her,” said sophomore, April Lubenow, who has been Melissa’s friend since 1st grade. “I thought, ‘How could this happen to someone so healthy and active?’”
Autoimmune hepatitis is a deadly disease in which the immune system sees the liver as foreign to the body and attacks it.
Within days of being diagnosed, Melissa was flown to the Children’s Hospital in Denver, Colorado. Her liver and kidneys were failing, and soon she would be in critical need of a liver transplant.
The community rallied to her support, as the Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA), a national nonprofit charity, began to raise money for her medical expenses at various fundraisers.
It was on September 1st, nearly a month a half after being diagnosed, that she received a liver transplant. She has been on the bumpy road to recovery since.
Karin Fakelman, COTA member and campaign coordinator for Berg, said that “Emotionally she has her good days and bad days... Melissa gains strength from knowing that so many are supporting and praying for her.”
For more information on Melissa’s condition go to carepages.com, under the page “MelissaBerg”. Thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated.
Article Deux:
Resolutions for a better life
With the New Year comes way to better one’s life
By Kurtis Butler – copy editor
New Year’s resolutions have been helping people improve their lives since the time of the ancient Babylonians, allowing them to start fresh, and decide to better their life, whether it pertains to internal or external problems.
Many resolutions are around bettering one’s self, through various means. Physically people decide to do things like losing weight, exercising more or eating healthier. People resolve to do other things, including changing spending habits, promising themselves that they will save more, and buy less. Of course these aren’t limiting, as many people make resolutions to better the mind or soul. “I want to read more,” said junior Jennifer Martinovich as she listed her resolutions for the upcoming year.
Although they are good thing for many people, some don’t always follow through with their plans, or only follow them for a short period. “I keep mine for the first couple months in general,” admitted Martinovich.
At times many feel depressed after creating and then failing to fulfill their resolutions. “I think about mine the whole year,” says Martinovich.
Some feel the faults in resolutions out-weigh the positives, and choose not to make them. “I try not to make resolutions,” said junior Sterling Fairchild. “I try to live life one day at a time.”
There is a good side to resolutions, though, as the joy in fulfilling a resolution lightens the heart of the resolution maker.
As Martinovich says, “New Years resolutions are a great way for someone to improve their life.”
I know they're short, but they're a hell of a longer looking when formatted for the paper.

Well, I made it back from Kansas just fine. I saw a number of overturned and wrecked vehicles along the way though (about nine semis tipped in three hundred miles). Winds were gusting as high as 45 mph. We went for about a mile on I-25 with only about ten feet visiblity, because of the sand whipped up by the winds. But we made it, so I'm good. My great grandmother's funeral was nice (the reason why I went to Kansas), and I was glad I was there for my grandmother's sake. Well, I shouldn't be going anywhere else for a while. Back to make-up work for school.

This has to have been the worst f*cking night of my f*cking life! First, I almost got fired from my job. I think I was saved by the fact that no one can pass a f*cking wizz quiz in my town, and Walmart needs all the help they can get. They wanted me to go in tomorrow for 5 and a half hours, to cover because so many people have quit/called in. I told 'em no, because I gotta go to church in the morning. The assistant manager then puts up a fuss about it, and we get into a slightly heat argument before I told him hands down no, and walked back to my job. I never really liked her anyways. Good thing she's transfering in a little over a week. Then I have to deal with dumbass people who are too stupid to figure out that you have to follow the plain english (or spanish) in order to use self-checkouts correctly. So then I finally get on my way home, when I get pulled over. The f*cking douche bag cop gives me a ticket for running a red light, when it was yellow when I went through the intersection. There goes some money down the drain. Well, I'm home, and I'll probably stay home and play WoW tomorrow. Then I gotta call my dad and explain to him what happened... I know it could be worse, but dammit, I'm friggin fuming right now.

So, that ticket was 50 bucks, but I got over... I wrote my last entry in a fit of rage. The new semester just began, and new classes have come with the new begining. AP English and Pre-Calc, followed by Latin III, I think it's not going to be an easy semester. I ended last semester with an A in Latin II, Journalism Pub. (I still gotta post another article) and Modern American Studies (Social Studies), as well as a B in Chem. 1A... I was never really that great in Science anyways. I also got my results from my pSAT test I took back in October. I got a 176, 84th percentile. Well, that's all for now. Until next time,
-Kurtis
