View Full Version : College Bowl Game Pick'Em

Welcome to the second annual College Bowl Game Pick'em. Last year's pick'em went down to the final game between USC and Texas as I was barely able to pass Gabby Jay and win the game. Chances of me repeating are practically non-existant, so its all the more reason to play!
How to play:
At the end of this post will be all 32 Bowl games, including the 4 BCS Bowls and the National Championship. To play, simply pick a winner for every game. I do mean every game.
The bowls each have a point value depending on how big a bowl it is. For example, the first game (Poinsettia Bowl) is worth a single point, while each of the BCS games are worth 5 points, like last year. Whoever has the most points after all the bowl games will win the pick'em.
In case of ties, here's how they will be broken:
1) Ties will be broken depending on how many individual games a person picks correctly. For instance, even though I won last year's pick'em by only a few points, Gabby Jay actually picked the most games correctly.
2) If there is still a tie, priority then goes to those who participated in the College Football Pick'em throughout the entire year. Those who dropped/were kicked out do not count for this category.
All picks must be submitted before the Poinsettia Bowl on December 19th. You are allowed to change any pick as long as that pick is changed before that game starts, of course. Please bold, underline, or otherwise mark your picks.

Updated to here.
The first bowl game starts tonight, so unless someone posts picks in the next 5 or so hours, there'll be 14 participants this year.
If you want to change one or more picks, make sure to post that you do and not edit your post without letting me know. Obviously, you can't change a pick for a game once that game starts.

I'm kind of cutting it close, but I'd like to change my pick for the game tonight to TCU.

Though I've been updating the standings daily, I'm posting now to say that, from here on out, things get serious. Eight three-point games and two BCS games on Monday will definately seperate the contenders from everyone else before Janurary 2nd.
Also posting to have every make sure they have the correct number of games/points in the standings.

Georgia Tech's coach has passed Tom Brady on my hatred list. Who THROWS it on 3rd and long in the redzone, down by 3 with like 5 minutes left? Then they get a block in the back later after a 10 yard run and miss a 54 yard field goal. I've never seen worse playcalling in a bowl game. To hell with him. Way to blow an 18 point lead.

You say only 3 people picked Boise? smash, Freakish, and polonium picked Boise. Add me in there it should be 4. With those 5 extra points, I'M IN FIRST!!!!!

It appears that I'm very bad at picking college football games. I must have done bad because there weren't many actual "home" teams.

I'm gonna get out of the minority and switch my Sugar Bowl pick to LSU. I forgot it was in the Superdome.
And with my luck, ND will now go ahead and win in the upset.

That makes it a clean sweep then, nobody is picking the Irish in the Sugar Bowl.

I'll switch to ND. Since I'm so far gone I guess it's time to be the hometown fan. With any luck Samardzja will be staying in Indy for his NFL career.

Updated the standings. With three bowl games remaining, there are nine points left to be had (the two oddly scheduled bowls and the National Championship). You'll note in the standings I've added a 'champion cut off point', where everyone below that line is mathematical unable to win this thing now.

Dont ask me why I have this free time, but I do. I worked out the scenarios for everyone still alive and this is what I came up with. Of course I could have made a mistake, so dont yell at me if everything goes right for oyu and you still lose.
-If all of Rick's teams win he will still be knocked out by Jester.
-Since Velo and Quagmire picked the same 3 remaining teams, they would each be tied with each other and Freakish if their teams win.
-If all of Crosshair's teams win he would still be knocked out by Freakish.
-If all of Freakish's teams win, he wins it outright.
-If all of Jester's teams wins he wins outright.
-If all of my teams win I win outright.
I hope I got all of that right.

January 4th, 2007, 03:43 PM
Yeah, you got it. Which means at this point the big game is between SMU and Ohio. Winner of that game essentially picks who is gonna win between me and FJ.
Actually, you can win another way James. As long as you get at least 2 of 3 right, you win
James89
January 4th, 2007, 04:20 PM
Yea I figured that one out too. I need either a sweep of the two "smaller" bowls or a spilt of the smaller bowls and a Florida win.

Anyone know if I can still win with the WM loss?
Rick52
January 6th, 2007, 02:43 PM
I didn't even know that game had started, let alone finished already.
Let's see... as it is if you win out you won't pass James. If you change your GMAC pick to Southern Miss, and then Southern Miss and Ohio State win, you can pass James, but Freakish would still be ahead of you. You're not mathematically gone, but you're gonna need other people to screw up for you.

So... if Southern Miss and Ohio State win... then Quagmire and I tie for #1?
Rick52
January 6th, 2007, 11:17 PM
In terms of points, yes. However, since you've correctly picked more individual games, you'd win the tiebreaker.
Edit: no wait, I was thinking of Freakish. Hold on for a moment.
Edit2: according to the tiebreak rules I put up (which I should reverse to where games correct is the first tiebreaker), the next tiebreaker would be based on your performances in the season version of the game. So, Quagmire would edge you out as he finished higher in the game than you.
Velocity

Blasphemy. That shouldn't be how it works. :P
Eh, oh well.
Rick52
January 6th, 2007, 11:22 PM
Edit3: actually, if I keep the tiebreak order as is, Freakish would win in your scenario as he actually has a better % in the season game as both of you, despite having a fewer game correct than the two of you.
Edit: actually no edit3 because I was beaten before edit3. yeah.

Oh now there I would really have to disagree. It should come down to the number of bowls picked correctly first because that's what we're doing here, right? Picking bowl games?
James89
January 7th, 2007, 10:51 PM
So wait, I dont automatically lose all tie breakers?
Ehh, that wont matter anyways cause all I need is for Ohio to win tomorrow.
Since Ohio lost, I need a Florida win. I could change my pick to Ohio State, but I wanna make it interesting.

January 7th, 2007, 11:04 PM
Ok, Jamesy its down to you and me. Just so you know, if you change your pick to OSU, I'm changing mine to Florida. Its win or bust

You know, the Big 10 did go 2-1 against the SEC in direct competition in the Bowls, with Penn State and Wisconsin doing their conference proud.
Still, though, congrats.

Penn state came to play, I'll give you that. But Arkansas dominated Wisconsin. Their defense couldnt be penetrated. Also, the SEC's best dominated the Big 10's best.

I don't think you and I watched the same Arkansas/Wisconsin game. I thought Wisconsin held the upper hand most of the game, they managed to contain Jones and McFadden. Although Wisconsin's offense went out in the second half, it did enough in the first half to seal the game
