I've been looking for a microphone as I'm the vocalist. Most recommend a Shure SM58, which is what I was looking at before anyone offered opinions. Some other people said Shures suck and I should get a Sennheiser E835. The reviews for both are pretty mcuh split down the middle. One will say that the Shure sucks and get the Sennhesier, but then for the Sennheiser, someone will say that it sucks and go for the Shure. What do you think I should get? Experience from owning either of these would help greatly.

We only use sm58's and sm57's. The sm58 is by far the best vocal mic.

I've also heard that SM57's are better for miking instruments rather than vocals. Do you use the 57's for backing vocals or do you mike the instruments with them?

The SM57 and SM58 are both unidirectional cardioid microphones, so they're good if you want to mic one thing without a lot of background noise. They both are great mics, but the SM57's frequency response is more tailored towards instruments while the SM58 is for vocals.

I use 57's because they are great instrument mics for the money and if in the rare occasion I need to record vocals, they still sound good for them. Since you're a vocalist, I'd go with the SM58.

Sure, there are a lot of critics, but Shure's microphone technology has pretty much remained unchanged for the last 50 years. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I was going to suggest this one, too. My best friend is a singer and he swears by it.

Thanks for the help! I'll be getting an SM58 for sure and maybe a 57 for instruments.
