View Full Version : Topic for Questions/Comments/Etc on the proposed changes to Game Genres

The changes have taken place. The new forum can be found at http://forums.gamewinners.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=811

Since a majority of the game genre forums are terribly inactive, a suggestion had been made to merge them. Plus, there were numerous times when new members did not know what a "genre" forum was, didn't know which genre to pick, mods who didn't know we had genre forums and didn't move topics, etc. After discussion and an e-mail to Al, here's what we propose:

Merge all current Game Genre forums into one large forum called General Game Help - with the exception of Wrestling Games.

Move General Game Help and Wrestling Games to the Game Help Section.

Delete the now empty Game Genres section.

We can create any subforums as needed for any genre(s) the mods feel are truly separate and don't cross as many boundaries as other genres. Or ones that get too much traffic in the main forum. (The RPG genre will be made its own subforum)

All current mods of all the game genre forums will stay on as mods if they wish, even though it will give us 8 mods for that forum. All their expertise will be needed. However, if one leaves, they will not be replaced until the forum goes below the 4 mod max.

All mods have been notified of this, Al has approved, and we've discussed any issues. I hope we've found the best solution/compromise for all forums.

Please use this thread to ask questions, voice concerns, etc.

Hah! Wrestling is slowly taking over GameWinners! MWAHAHAHAHAHA!

Ahem. Anyway, I always liked Apollo's modding; but he hasn't had much of an opportunity to exhibit his ability. So, fortunately, this should give him some more stuff to do.

The 8 mod team is kind of... I don't know. I understand why you're doing it, but I think there are other forums who could use mods than the same one which likely won't receive a sudden increase in activity following the change.

Yes, it is too many mods, but out of fairness we can't pick and choose who will be the 4 to stay on.

As for the wrestling stuff, we may fix a subsection sometime soon thus why it isn't getting merged with the rest. That's in the works and kinda up to Vash since BG and I don't know squat about wrestling.

Could you alternate who gets to be the 4 mods every month or so?

That would be way too complicated. Its just easier to let whomever wants to stay, to stay.

I was just about to request that the RPG forum get it's own subforum since it is the largest excluding wrestling. Then I noticed I obviously didn't read your post close enough.

Thanks though for reading my mind in advance.

Heh, no need to worry about the RPG forum. It's Taryn's baby, afterall.

Apollo is a great mod.

I wanna see how this all works out. Um new SmackdownWrestling Game is coming out soon which I guess that means the old SMackdown could either be merged with or just maybe change the name of the forum so people can find it.

But as long as it all works out and greater minds have thought on this and got everything smooth. Go for it.

Would it not run the risk of becomming some expanding/contracting beast that needs reversing every 6 months after complaints of too much a mix up inside one forum? Not that I've a problem with it - I mean slowly everything was expanded anyway, so it's just reverting to a bit how it was in the old days...

It's possible, though looking at Game Genres now only a couple of those forums could really be considered active in any sense of the word. A few of them are completey barren, and most of the rest are a bit of a mess. I think it's pretty clear that the way it is arranged now is not working, and the next logical step is to create one big forum at the top of Game Help so it can be found easily by new members, with any applicable sub forums added on as and when they are needed. Obviously predicting the future on this site can be difficult at the best of times (as you no doubt well know), and I personally think that this forum is going to go through something of a transitional phase to find it's own style and identity (especially with the number of moderators it has), but I think this is the best we can do with what we're faced with.

<3 Taryn. It's not my baby any more, but I would still fight for it for or with Taryn.

What about changing the Video Game Bashing forum name to something more accurate to what is discussed in there.

A lot of the threads aren't even bad mouthing video games, a lot are praising them. What about changing it to something like "Video Game Discussion" forum.

As long as RPG has it's own sub-forum, I'm okay, seeing has how it doesn't really go with the rest of the "stuff."

Question though, would the 'real-time/turn-based strategy' forum get integrated into the soon to be RPG sub forum?

That is what it's supposed to be, though.

Instead of combining all of the forums into one huge massive forum that no one would ever want to navigate to find a single topic, why not just merge the like forums together?

Fighting games and Platformers are closely related, just have different playing styles. Action/Adventure, RPG and MMORPG forums go together well. Racing and Sports games could be combined. I don't know what a "CAW" is, so I can't reccomend anything for that, but it looks like it has stuff to do with wrestling, so why not just make it a sub forum of the wrestling games? As for the rest... I guess you have to use your imagination o.o

Fighting games and Platformers are closely related, just have different playing styles. If by 'closely related' you mean 'completely different', then yes.

Action/Adventure, RPG and MMORPG forums go together well.RPG and MMORPG games have any obvious connection, but the connection between Final Fantasy VII and Splinter Cell? That's a tough one.

Racing and Sports games could be combined. That's just about the only logically feasible one.

I don't know what a "CAW" is, so I can't reccomend anything for that, but it looks like it has stuff to do with wrestling, so why not just make it a sub forum of the wrestling games?Create A Wrestler already is a sub forum of Wrestling.

So in conclusion, your suggestions would really only make it much more difficult for new users to find, well, anything. Lumping together unrelated forums is not a solution to inactivity.

That is what it's supposed to be, though.Well just look at the forum. We have "Games that made you say 'wow'" thread, the "Most influential video games" thread, we have "Your proudest video game moment" thread, and "Best game no one played" thread. And plenty more like that, only half the threads actually bash video games.

If its suppose to be a game bashing forum, then Jamie is doing a terrible job at modding it. Which by all means he is not.

Yeah, maybe the fighting and platformers was a bad idea. I just couldn't think of anything else for it.

Action/Adventure is what I was thinking more along the lines of Legend of Zelda and not Splinter Cell.

As for the CAW thing, I just saw it on the forum listing under Genres, which is why I mentioned it. Since they already are, then never mind.

CAW is a subforum of Wrestling. ;)

The forum was originally made as the game equivalent of 'Console Combat'. And, up until recently at least, Console Combat included more than simple 'combat' threads, and to be honest still has its fair share of general discussion threads. Personally I think that any forum title with 'bashing' or 'combat' in the title implies that people will be criticial, but in order for discussion on the matter to exist people must also praise things, hence there inevitably being positive topics.

On top of that, the forum is doing fine with the name as it is, and is nice and active. If anything I think changing it to something as mundane as 'General Video Game Discussion' may not only encourage more Game Help topics, but also just somewhat takes life out of the title.

This has been done.
