View Full Version : Best Guitar Solo???

What do you think is the best guitar solo??? I personally like Lynyrd Skynyrd's Freebird (i can play it on guitar), but my all-time favorite is Jimi Hendrix's Machine Gun. It's 12 minutes of him wailing on his guitar and showing how much talent he has (or had).
And at the end of all the madness and shredding of him playing, he imitates a machine gun with his guitar.

I have no all time favorite guitar solo... there's too many of them...
Although my current fix is Adam Jones from Tool on Jambi... I like the effects he produces on his guitar...

I love that solo, best one he's done in a while :D
But my favorite right now would be...Travis Stevers solo on the Willing Well IV: Final Cut, it reminds me soo much of Pink Floyd its not even funny, without ripping them off at the same time, which shows how great Coheed is
I dont really know if it counts as a solo but the intro to 2112 is awesome.

Just for mentioning 2112 gets you rep from this powerful source.
As for my favorite solo... I'm not sure. You've got Dragonforce with its six solos per song, Iron Maiden's trademark solos, and Gamma Ray's melodic solos... I'll try to narrow it down as best as I can.
Powerslave by Iron Maiden. (Best done on the "Live After Death" recording live) It starts off with a slow guitar line as the bass does most of the technical work in creating a dark, mysterious mood while the guitar accents the higher notes and rumbles with the low notes. About a minute in, the guitar takes over, wailing all of the notes that the bass hits but with much more force. The twin guitars solo over and under each other as they rip through one of the most complex yet atmospheric solos I've heard in a long time. It gives me goosebumps whenever I hear it.

I really enjoy guitarists who emote, and Def Leppard's Phil Collen is quite good at it. His solo in "Blood Runs Cold" makes me tingle every time I hear it, so I guess I'd say that's my favorite guitar solo.

Yeah, but Rush rule! of course 2112 is gonna be good. Three musicians, each possibly the best in their field (Theres no contest that Neal Peart is probably the best skin basher rocking today).
Hotel California, with it's three overlapping guitars for the solo, is pretty admirable!!

for me it's the solo in Powerslave by Maiden. a brilliant 3-part solo, it starts with a slow soulful solo, and builds towards the fast second and third solos. for me, this is the best example of Smith and Murray's dueling solos that you can get.
oh, and people, remember this:

Well I can't say anything that hasn't already been said in terms of best ever - you got Clapton, Hendrix, Murray, the list goes on.
Recently though, there has been a particular solo that has rocked my nuts off - On Opeth's Ghost Reveries. I believe it's at the end of Harlequin Forest - could be at the end of another track. I can't quite remember how it goes but it's played at blistering pace and ends in a short drum solo and then the song winds down.

It is good. I am listening to that right now. Also the solo on the In Flames song "Only for The Weak" is great. Slow, but I love it.

While he could easily be mentioned as 'one of the best' for sheer technical ability, two specific solos by John Petrucci on Dream Theater's Octavarium stand out for not being 100% "wankfests" like he's known for.
"The Root of All Evil" starts off in a lower register than he's used to soloing in, and in the second half of it is quite expressive while maintaining the intensity of the song. I was blown away by how he was able to make a fast solo in a fastish song show some emotion.
Then, in "Panic Attack" he writes a suitably insane solo to fit the song, but it's not overly wanky like some solos ("In the name of God" comes to mind) although it is a bit less played out like the solo in "Root".
These two are arguably two of his best solos, IMO, because while they don't lack in technical ability, they aren't quite the same 2 minutes of sweeping arpeggios that we expect out of him.

i do have a soft spot for Petrucci's solos - my two favourites are The Spirit Carries On, and the outro solo on In the Name of God (from the Live at the Budokan album). this is because, whilst they are both technically excellent, they have a lot of emotion in them too.

One of the best purely electric guitar solos I've ever heard is in Tears Don't Fall, the song from Bullet For My Valentine. It actually is split up - there are two instances within the song, but regardless, it's one of the best solos.
As far as the overall best from the music I've heard... good question. Freebird is amazing, but I also have a liking for Powerslave and For The Greater Good Of God.

You know, I can't believe I didn't mention the ITNOG Budokan solo.
Because honestly, that solo is so damn good it brought chills to me a little bit when I first heard it.
Why the hell couldn't he have put that on the album? It's so moving, emotional, yet doesn't lose any of his technical ability. It's supremely wonderful, and I'm hoping he keeps this in mind on future albums.

It's either a love/hate relationship with that song, with me personally going in the love camp. Just wondering what side you're on, if either.

i think that it's a decent song amidst excellent songs. pretty much all the songs on SFOM have that bit of emotion in them that sets them apart, wheras TDOE really doesn't.

I mean, I think it has it's own emotion...the main riff right after the opening is really cool, and the ending buildup to the final riff is pretty emotional I think too...
I mean, you can't necessarily judge it's emotional content equally with the other songs because it *is* an instrumental, where the others often gain lots of emotion from the wonderful singing of LaBrie.
I'm not saying it's the best on there, but I do think it's cool. I am partial to it because of the insane bass solo Myung pulls off, but yeah. :D

All of the solos on that song are pretty wild - which is why I don't really rate it so much myself. It's good, just a little boring after a while. It dosen't need to be 10 minutes long because it *is* an instumental. Sometimes, when Dream Theater go into one of their wild jam sessions in the middle of a song, it does irk me a little. Seeimg them do it live though, that was brilliant. Oh well, I still love them, despite the minor complaints.

There are too many, but here we go:
Whole Lotta Love by Led Zep: Utterly amazing, air-guitarrific moment
Dragonforce's six solos per song: just listen to it
Free Bird
Stairway to Heaven
Paradise City by Guns 'n' Roses
Most Metallica solos, but namely The Unforgiven, Master of Puppets, One, Creeping Death and Seek and Destroy
Voodoo Child (slight return) by Hendrix
Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd: possibly the best ever
Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen: Short but fantastic
Eruption by Van Halen: I wasn't going to get away without saying that
Just about everything Steve Vai plays, but namely For the Love of God
Daddy, brother, lover, little boy by Mr Big
Circles by Joe Satriani: apart from the rest of the solo, the way he just milks that first note puts him here. Listen to the song to see what I mean
and now for the most overrated solo ever:
Enter Sandman! I love Metallica, but without the wah this is pitiful.
I probably forgot something, but whatever.

Yeah.
Longest song on there is Beyond This Life at 11+ minutes.
IMO that's one of the best on album, because of all the styles it throws in there.
However, it is also home to what I've heard referred to as the "Trumpet solo abortion" by Rudess...the jam section in the middle where he uses some sort of trumpet/brass patch to solo awkwardly with...that's pretty bad.
But the rest of the song is pretty awesome.

I, like most people who have posted here, can't narrow it down to one solo. So here are several of mine (in no order):
Pretty much all Metallica solos
Eruption
Painkiller (3 solos plus it's Artificial Harmonic Heaven in the fills)
Welcome Home (the only Coheed song I like)
A lot of A7X solos
Plenty of Dragonforce's solos
And tooooo many other's that I don't feel like typing :D

I'm going to have to say the end of the song 'Floods' by Pantera. It fades out with a guitar solo, and although it's not a 'Ima shove my dick in your ear' like Vai or Petrucci often do, meaning it's not super fast, it is still damn good. I love it.

Best guitar solo in my opinion is the solo from Stranger in a Strange Land by Iron Maiden. Adrian Smith's solo on that song makes my hair stand up. It's sick how it starts off all slow and soft-like and then it gets faster. Not too fast, just fast enough. That solo alone makes it my personal favorite song of all time.
Another favorite solo of mine is the solo in Children of the Damned, also by Maiden. I love how it starts of with Murray and Smith playing a duel-solo (not sure if that term makes sense, but you know what i mean) the it kicks into a crazy shredding solo in an otherwise not-so-fast song.
Yet another favorite of mine is in Prowler also by Maiden. See a pattern forming here? Then again, ask me any question like "Who is the best *insert instrument here* player? Chances are I'd say someone from Maiden.

Speed, yes. Tonality and technique, no.I know it doesn't have much quality to it, but as I said I liked it for the speed.
When it comes to quality, I of course like Dimebag's solos and Zakk Wylde's solos. When I think of a good solo I always think of the solo from Angel of Death, cause that was one of the first solos I recognized. Before I got into metal I didn't know anything about music and I had a lot of trouble recognizing solos but when I first heard that solo I knew immediately it was a solo. I still like it and enjoy listening to it even if it does lack quality.

Comfortably Numb is probably the best ever, and as a personal note I can play most all of that :-D

For me it is:
Thunderstruck - AC/DC. The arpeggio or whatever Angus does is incredibly fast and sounds perfect and awesome.
Eruption - Van Halen. The entire song is a guitar solo. It's certainly my favourite. The slapping near the last-half is awesome and sticks in your head.
Hey Joe - Jimi Hendrix. He plays the solo with his teeth, and let alone not a lot of people can manage to do it with their fingers.
My favourite Dragonforce solo, Fury of the Storm. Wow, the beginning is absolutely awesome, the speed that Herman Li plays the high noted "arpeggio" at is simply put, incredible.
Bat Country by Avenged Sevenfold. Eh, I'm sure there is a good reason why they're underrated and unheard-of, but I found out that they have some decent solos, this one being my favourite. It fits into the song perfectly, and somewhere near the middle of the solo there is a short part that sounds awesome with a guitar(s) alone with a light drum rhythm.
Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd. As said earlier, the solo is long. It covers pretty much a decent guitar solo should, not to mention it's fast and sounds clear.

I have to say, my favorite guitar solo is the either the part at the end of "Iron Man" by Black Sabbath or the one in the middle of "Mother" by Danzig. "Iron Man" just has those cool, slightly minimalist solos with a great amount of feeling behind it, and "Mother" is a classic example of good late-Eighties/Early-90's guitar work.

Hells Bells By ACDC. I saw that nobody mentioned this one, but angus/malcom were the only reasons why I liked this song. IMO brian johnson the lead singer sounds like a goof in some parts
Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd. OF course, probably one of the best ones out there.
Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin. Definetly not overrated to me. Probably one of the first great rock songs that i've heard, and one of the reasons why I got into that kinda music.

Anyways, despite this being an incredibly old topic, I'm surprised no one brought up John Butler's "Ocean", which is basically a 5-25 minute song/solo done on an 11 string, acoustic (yet amped) guitar. I think the best part about it is the fact that despite the song is relatively old, he keeps adding more and more to it with each show. The phrasing is incredible. I highly recommend that people buy one of his live cds for his solos.

He's seen them live a few times and I've seen them live three times now and they play the same speed live... its just sloppier so some things sound different.

I believe they speed up their tapes in the studio...
They don't, it just takes them many tries..[Not saying everyone else records perfect]
I agree with the majority here, I'm so glad there are Dream Theater fans on GW, I have never gone into much depth with Dream Theater but have watched more of individual videos of each member, one of my favorite solos would have to be the ending of This Dying Soul from DT.
Also, Bodom Beach Terror by Children Of Bodom. I can't really describe Alexi, except for mentioning his nickname: Alexi "Wildchild" Laiho. btw he is from Finland, if that tells you metal fans anything ;-]
Even if you don't like vocals that are screaming or yelling, I recommend COB, if you like technicality and/or references to classical.

Picking the best guitar solo is like choosing between Jessica Alba and Megan Fox. It's goddamn hard.
Comfortably Numb, Money, Shine On You Crazy Diamond [Part 1] - Pink Floyd
Freebird - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Europa (Earth's Cry, Heaven's Smile) - Santana
The End - The Beatles
Little Wing - The Jimi Hendrix Experience
Hotel California & Try And Love Again (short) - The Eagles
Texas Flood - Stevie Ray Vaughan
Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
Some more, but I can't think of any at the top of my head right now.

Selkies: The Endless Obsession by Between The Buried And Me. No-one has done sweep picking as brilliantly as this.

Welcome Home by Coheed and Cambria would have to be considered I believe...
dueling guitars in different tunings, amazing phrasings, and an epic feel that is missing in most modern music.
