That's interesting. I think you're right in that that part of his soul was destroyed. After all, he should have died but didn't because of the pieces of his soul that remained earthbound. If he had completed his seven part soul at that time and hasn't made any replacements since he's been back (eg. Nagini?) there would be only 3 remaining horcruxes for Harry to find. But I think that the book said he was short one or two when he went to finish off Harry that night in Godrics Hollow...and that that failed killing was intended to be a split that was encased in a horcrux.

But you forget what a horcrux is: a fragment of the soul sealed within some foreign object outside of the body.

it is indeed possible that R.A.B. destroyed the Horcrux, but we do not know for certain. It was never specifically said in the book that it was indeed destroyed, we only know that it was found. that's why I put the words "for certain" in the question (so yes, the locket did come to mind when I came up with that question:))

he only made six horcruxes, because he wanted his soul split into seven pieces. according to what Harry and Dumbledore said after they saw the unaltered memory from Slughorn, the six horcruxes were Riddle's diary, the Gaunts' ring, Slytherin's locket, Hufflepuff's cup, something of Ravenclaws, most likely, and possibly Nagini.
