You have a week to check in. Last person to check in posts first. You guys decide the length and time limit. Fights must be 1-5-1 or less. Good luck to all. Any further questions, PM me or leave a post. Also, ref present.

Meh, I tried to call him, but my number for him is apparently no longer correct. I got some girl named Renee's voicemail. Well, hopefully he'll show. Otherwise maybe I can convince Renee to fight you.

Although apparently Renee is the name of his wife (I thought so, but just double checked). So that is probably correct. I'll leave her a message and see.

Hey, I'm smart, eh?

Uhm... I'll go first, you choose the length? Don't make it like a 1-5-1, because we'll never finish. Something decent, maybe a 1-2-1, or 1-3-1?

Xellos
October 2nd, 2006, 07:18 PM
1-2-1 is fine i guess... short on time means i cant write as much, so 4 is fine.

i await :D

Meathos

Mmmkay, expect it... Sometime. I can't give a timeframe, because my life is rather unpredictable at this time, so, yeah.

Shouldn't be too long, though.

Meathos

Ugh. Been a while, hasn't it?

Sorry about this. I've had things happening in my life, like school, bullsh!t with parents, University applications, etc. I'll get it up as soon as I can.

lol, I'll get to it now. I've been busy with University sh!t, work, etc.

It was that time again… The tournament had begun, for the first time in… He couldn’t remember. All he did remember was how the last time it rolled it’s epic mass towards him, he’d managed to get away. This time, however, he was sucked into it.

He’d just returned from a campaign along the border, dealing with small groups of the enemy here and there. It was mostly small skirmishes, as he’d expected. When he did return to the splendid chorus of cheering women in the wide, sun-drenched streets of Brethrondil’s capital, he encountered something he hardly expected: An invitation.

He’d read it over hundreds of times in his cramped candle-lit quarters. There wasn’t much to it, just some words scratched onto parchment, with a seal towards the bottom-right corner that had been torn and tattered. He could barely make it out. What he did see was a bit of a skull, perhaps a scythe. Most of the words themselves had been faded, the ones towards the edges of the browned, wrinkled, almost fabric-like paper were illegible. But, Meathos recognized it immediately when he first laid his orangey eyes upon it’s cursed self. Yes, he’d seen it before, when he first experienced the tournament.

At that time, when he first remembered seeing the tournament and its invitations, he had a friend. That friend was older than him by some years, and much more skilled, as he remembered. However faded and blurred his recollections, Meathos remembered that one fact well. Felerial was a damn good fighter. He had seen his friend off all those years ago. He could almost feel the other’s crushing handshake again.

Felerial never returned.

With a grunt, Captain Meathos Alregdia of the Brethrondil’s ‘King’s Eyes’ Regiment looked at the ancient paper once more. He’d had it in his possession for almost half a year… If he went now, he would arrive late. If he backed out, he would most likely be ridiculed, or hunted down for cowardice. He took a swig of whiskey from his flask, which stood beside the parchment on his worn-in wooden table, covered in wax from years of burned candles. Meathos hated housecleaning.

He gasped slightly, and involuntarily twisted his head to the right as the alcohol rushed down his throat. With his leaving breath came an aftertaste of slight butterscotch, and the tell-tale burn of the devil’s water. The flask slammed down on the table with a cracking thud. Droplets of golden liquid jumped in the air, some landing and soaking into the wood below.

He took another deep breath, and looked around his dimmed chambers. He could see the dancing firelight in the shadow-veiled armour which laid on a bed nearby. He could see the glistened texture of worn leather on the spines of his books to his left. They stood still and straight, in lines, just as soldiers. The brass handle of his door glowed in the darkness, reflecting the candle back at Meathos. Beyond that, darkness. Everywhere.

Pretending to be deep in thought, the red-haired man drummed on his table with his thumbs. He often did that, pretended to be thinking. He’d been told before that it helped him keep calm in stressful situations, like a fight, or during important decision-making… He chuckled. Ironic how he was thinking of making decisions, while procrastinating to do so. With a smirk, he leaned forward, swept up the parchment, and stuffed it into a pocket he’d found somewhere on him. He then sniffed, and rubbed his nose clean. He could smell the musty parchment on his hands… How many had held it before.

“Now how the Hell am I supposed to go to this tournament? Meet this ’Grim Reaper’? I doubt he even exists…” Meathos thought aloud. Just then, a sharp pain screamed across his leg. Reaching inside, he removed the invitation, along with a miniature scythe… “Hmph.” He rubbed his leg through his trousers.

He unfolded the parchment, which now read, clear as day, ‘South’. Chuckling at the occurrence as if he saw the like every day, Meathos pocketed it once again, and heaved up his breastplate. “Looks like I leave soon…” He would make it look as though he was off to see family, perhaps buy supplies: If the army found out he was entering an illegal underground tournament fight-to-the-death, he’d be confined, questioned, demoted, and sent to the North, to fight the Korlis. He’d never been far North… He never wanted to go. He had enough with the revolting revolutionary monarchist farmers that the people knew nothing of, never mind the looming towers rising up from the mountain borders that were rumoured to be absolutely full of Korlis. He thought he’d seen one of them before, ‘walking’ almost as a spider does through the mountains. When he asked about it, Felerial told him it was a simple scout, no real threat. They then had packed up and moved away at double-time. But that was the North. He was heading South.

He wondered exactly how far South he would have to go… Brethrondil, although the smallest of the nations, was still a big place. It was mostly field, though, which made things easier. Forests dotted the countryside here and there, some rivers cut through it, and hills plagued it right around the capital, but it was by no means difficult terrain… As long as the weather stayed decent. Nothing was worse than a storm on a field. He’d been through them before, while patrolling. The thunderheads, the serpent-tongued lightning flashing and flicking across the sky, the rolling thunder… It was all incredible, but as anyone would expect, it is devastating to a man clad in steel armour in an open field…

As he entered the fields of Brethrondil, sword at his hip, armour clinging to him, he received exactly what he expected from the Gods: The worst. Saluting them, he found himself crossing the green-yellow plains, with grasses matted to the dry, loose, brown ground, under a darkened blue-black sky, accented with billowing clouds that rolled as they climbed higher and higher, booming shockwaves exploding from them as white-hot streams of static energy ripped apart the crumbling sky. A cold wind hit him, pushing him back towards the capital as if to warn him… He walked briskly to the South, attempting to gain as much distance as possible before he had to stop, or find shelter.

He figured, and hoped, that the fight would be in one of the smaller towns along the way to the Harbour: He hated the ocean. He could see the small farm towns in front of him, beyond an immense span of rolling hills and dancing trees. The wind was relentless. The sun was cowering…

The town was only a few days’ walk from where he was. He would camp in a bit of a trench, between a knoll and a smaller hill. He laid his pack down beside the deepest part of the crevice, then laid himself beside that. If it rained, he would not be drowned in a sea of foul-smelling water, brown with mud. If the wind kept up, he could not be chilled by it’s unforgiving temperature… He then began to build a small fire, hoping it would not rain… With the howling of the wind, the booming of thunder, and the clashing of flint, Meathos heard something else… He turned, drew his weapon, and looked to the tops of the hills.
