View Full Version : Spoiler tag update

I got tired of the dumb looking "Spoiler: Click below to view" instructions that came up everytime you used the spoiler tags.
When I first wrote the code, I figured people would need to be told why there were big bars in posts. Now I'm figuring it doesn't matter.
The spoiler tags can now be used in-line with text, like this.
They also show up when you put your mouse over them, you don't have to click it first..

I like that, but the mouseover could be a problem. If people write up a whole paragraph in spoiler, and someone accidently mouses onto it, they may be reading a spoiler and not even know it.

There, now it's still a huge black bar even when you're moused over.
(I was trying not to blatantly steal the idea from SA, which is where I got it from.)

What are the chances of accidentally running over a large paragraph taht youd read the whole thing, true, as you say a small piece could be revealed to them, but not all of it, unless they choose to read the whole thing.

Yeah I agree with Spike, I can see people accidentally revealing a large spoiler, but then 'accidentally' reading it all seems rather unlikely.
Nice addition Ben :^:

Well to Coleman's defense, when he made that comment it was still using the old method of hiding and unhiding itself. Meaning when your cursor was over the text, the background turned to the post background color and there wasn't any visual difference between that and any other text.
Now, if someone accidentally reads a spoiler, it's outright their own fault.

Nice idea there.. I'm liking it. Grant it I don't use spoiler tags much myself, but oh well. Either way, it's definitely better than having to point out what the red bar was every time someone wanted to make a tag. :chuckle:

Hey, question: Why is it that when I run my mouse over the new spoiler things they turn into the words (even though they shouldn't according to There, now it's still a huge black bar even when you're moused over.)?

Because when BG first changed it, the background of the spoiler turned into the normal background, now the background of the spoiler is black, so people know that it is a spoiler. He just explained this:P

No, he didn't. He explained that ...now it's still a huge black bar even when you're moused over.
But when I put my cursor over it, the spoiler stuff is revealed, without me clicking or anything. Browser? Settings? Anything useful?

The spoiler stuff is revealed, but the black bar remains. I'm guessing that before, the bar disappeared as well. Problem with that is that if the mouse is over the spoiler without the reader's knowledge, they could read a spoiler and never know if they don't move the mouse away from all the text in time.

Nope; before the black bar was still there, and it is still there/here now.

That depends... were you checking it out in the half hour between Ben changing it so that the bar disappeared, then editing it so that it didn't?Well to Coleman's defense, when he made that comment it was still using the old method of hiding and unhiding itself. Now, if someone accidentally reads a spoiler, it's outright their own fault.Mouseover = putting the cursor over the spoiler.

Actually, now that you mention it, I'm not sure.
But whether or not I experienced the spoiler tags in that period of time does not eliminate the fact that what BG said in post #3 is contradictory to my experiences. This contradiction is the source of my confusion.

Yes, formerly you had to click the bar to reveal it. Now you just need to hover over it but the black bar remains.

OK. Now I've got confirmation that this is the correct experience. (Which is good)
Though, now, I'm still somewhat confused about the 'black bar remains' thing.
So the first new spoiler tag thing you had to click, and on the second (current) it's on mouseover?
Crazy Jamie

Yes to the second question. What about the black bar remaining is confusing you? It makes it clear where the spoiler is just in case you hover your mouse over it by mistake.

I think you're misreading his timeline, Jamie. The 'first new spoiler tag thing' was mouseover as well I think. But it went from black bar over text -> normal beige background. The edit went from black bar over text -> black background with white writing.

OK. I finally understand. Thanks.

Highlight below.
One could use hidden tags to hide spoilers.
But then you'd need to point them out or people would completely miss them.

Exactly the problem. Besides, I don't see how black blocks significantly impact upon anyone's enjoyment of the forums.

if anything, they make the forums more fun because it adds in better colors.

Better colors!?! Its just black, how is that a "better" color? lol I really dont care what the tags look like, I hardly use them. But anyway, nice BG.
Disturbed.

I like the new spoiler tags, but to improve on the color idea, you could make the spoiler tags black by default, then if you put the text color tags around the spoiler tags it will cause the bar to be a different color

But then you'd need to point them out or people would completely miss them. Not to mention some web browsers highlight text by inverting both the text and the background. Highlighting wouldn't work at all in that case.
