i just wanted to learn more about distortion, and how to get in on most amps, because most times, i will be at a friends house, and they say "oh, the amp is on distortion" but u can tell it is not, or tat its barely...
on my amp, u set the drive, and speakers a certain way, to get distortion, how does it work on most amps? i know u can get a pedal, but it seems tat lots of times, distortion can be achieved by tweaking the amp
EDIT: basicaly, i got a pedal with distortion, but its not as good, as when i set the knobs on my amp the way it says in my manual...cause then ii get nice clean distortion

Musician's Corner would be better for this topic...
But anyway, most amps come with distortion, but you can get a better distortion sound out of some pedals. Some notable ones are, Line6 Tonecore Uber Metal, Boss DS-1 Distortion, and DigiTech Distortion Factory. All of these can be found for 100$ or under if stores don't over price them where you live. And technically, "clean distortion" is an oxymoron, but that doesn't really matter.

I just really go with what gives me good distortion with minimal background noise (static, feedback, etc.). I have "The Weapon" distortion pedal by Dan Donegan of Disturbed. Say what you will about them, but he's a f*cking genius when it comes to pedal effects.

LK you are my new hero! The Weapon is also what I have, and it is pure genius courtesy of Dan Donegan and the awesome guys at DigiTech. 7 effects in one pedal and you can't go wrong. Way too much bang for the buck. I got mine off of eBay for $84, but even if you buy retail for $150, you still got a steal.
Distortion from a Marshall Stack Combo is great, but not as good as a DigiTech pedal, no matter what DigiTech you get. If you don't like DigiTech, then go with Boss.
Cluck.

The only amp I wouldn't run a pedal through is a Mesa. I love that distortion. I have a Boss Metal Zone, and I love it.
Distortion is an art to me. For a good distortion sound, you need gain at 10, a lot of lows, hardly any mids, and highs can be variable.

Yeah, I've never played through one, but I've heard very good things about Mesa amps.

I honestly can't stand the Boss DS-1 but I normally dont use that kind of distortion. I mainly use a fuzzbow and my assortment of wah pedals. Honestly, though, when I do use distortion I use the standard Marshall amp distortion. Its all I ever really need. I DID think about getting the Black-13 pedal though.

A Dual-Rectifier would be heaven for me.
I really wanna try out the new Krank pedal, it'd be a good way to get Krank's tone without actually spending thousands of dollars on their stuff.
