I’m not really sure how to go about the discussion of a book like this… dealing largely with characters who aren’t important to anybody, so it’s really all about how good the stories are.
Overall, I thought the stories were great.
I liked the story of the Spacer, of the Jawa, the Moisture Farmer, and of the Stormtrooper the most. I really enjoyed the tie-ins with the spacer, Jawa, and Stormtrooper (and I guess the Ranat was important there, too… but not quite as interesting :D)
Although I know that it’s important that all these characters were in the Cantina at the time, I was grateful for the writers who chose not to embellish on every single event from A New Hope.
Droids show up and leave, the lightsaber is cool, Wuher yells, “no blasters, no blasters” Greedo gets killed… yeah… although it was kinda neat to see the multiple viewpoints of the familiar events, it did wear a little thin reading it detail over and over again.
Finally, I’ve gotta give props to Kevin Anderson. He is one talented guy. He did a really incredible job of tying it all in together, putting in a few small nods to other characters that appear elsewhere in the book… I’d have liked for more of that kind of continuity all throughout the book (there were really only connections between one character and the next character or two in the book), but it was nice when it was there. :)
Good stuff.
