Why are we still congratulating the February mods in March? Mod votes aren't monthly- we have mod votes as soon as we've got the required number of nominations (which depends on Vash's mood- usually five). We've had a noticeable lack of nominations in the past month.

When someone gets banned, how long is it for? (forever..?) Or is it the warning that has a limit?
Crazy Jamie
April 4th, 2005, 06:54 AM
People can either by permamently or temporarily banned, depending on the nature of rule infraction. Usually a ban is permanent. However, any ban can be lifted at any time for there is a good enough reason to do so.

so if you make one rule mistake like spamming when u were new, and not getting a warning, but a precaution, you couldnt be a mod?

Moderators - Mangages one, or a few, specific forums. They have basic staff CP powers that are limited to their forum, the can do stuff like giving an official warning, forum banning, and suggesting to their highers for a full banment on a user they feel they have delt with enough.
Super Moderators - Have access to manage all forums on Gamewinners.com. Anything a Moderator can do, SMods can do but in any forum they want. They can also ban users, give warnings, reset post counts (I think), etc...
Administrators - Basically, complete control. Admins can do anything to any forum (weather it be creating one, deleting one, altering one, etc...) and can alter the and change the site as they feel fit. They can do basically everything on Gamewinners.com except stuff that is inclosed in the vB system, like letting users view their reps in pages instead of the eariler reps being replaced for the new ones.

We need to rekwest forum blokks. Mods kan't do them themselves.

It is fairly rare, but there are times when it is appropriate. An obvious example is where someone was banned through an abuse of power, although that is more or less unheard of on this site. A recent example is that there was a situation (can't remember the members involved) where someone needed access to a banned account to alter the details of a Public Group because that account had started the group (or something along those lines). As I said it is rare, but happens from time to time.

Being a mod is only as much fun as you make it. I guess it all depends on the forum you mod. For me, HCW is a breeze. Few if any annoying n00bs, very little in the terms of actual mod stuff. Now the DS forum, that's a different story.

of course it's the mods fault. of course we blame them. we do the wrong thing, the mods come down on us and we feel pissed off cause we got caught. we fight it and the mods always come out on top becuse chances are they are in the right. but i have seen a few abuse powers. not fun.

Beowulf (I can't be bothered trying to find a way to type that symbol) is right- being a moderator is as much fun as you make it. Personally I really enjoy being a moderator, and like to think that as a result I do a good job. But it is a lot of work. It's no longer simply about enjoying the site. You have responsibilities, and if you do not meet those responsibilities then you must suffer the consequences. I don't know how people get it into their heads that it's a total laugh riot being a moderator because you get to close threads. It can be a lot of fun, but it is a lot of work too.

How's it a lot of work? What else do you have to do apart from monitor your forums?
Crazy Jamie
April 21st, 2005, 11:06 AM
Well clearly it depends on how active your forums are and how well you actually do your job. Clearly closing threads doesn't take any time past looking at the thread, but other such things as editing posts (of other members), splitting threads, writing announcements, requesting bans, noting warnings in user notes, checking IPs of members for similarities in cases of multiple accounts etc etc all take up a lot of extra time. And that's just for moderators- clearly the work load is increased significantly for s-mods and admins.

It seems like a tough job being mod, s-mod or admin. Whenever someone has a problem they feel the need to blame the mods, when they can do nothing about it. They put up with a lot of sh*t.
Yes. Yes we do. I get PMs every so often from n00bs with under 500 posts (always the low posters, don't know why) asking the can I be a mod question. I reply with a simple moment of laughing my head off. That usually does the trick. Or I say "go up to Al and give him a cookie" or something more demeaning if they deserve it. Actually.... doing that is fun. It makes me want to be an Smod just so I can find more of them and have more fun. Oh, I wish I wish I wish......

They then continue with an outburst of negative rep, thinking that giving it to you will get you de-modded or you will somehow resent them.
Then again, I hear most mods are rep-whore's these days. :shake:

Then again, I hear most mods are rep-whore's these days. Most mods have a lot of rep, but that's just from us playing with the system. We really couldn't give a damn. Any moderator that shows the slightest hint of caring about rep is normally made fun of. Quite right, too.

I wasn't too happy when I went from Lawful Good to Chaotic Evil after getting rep bombed from a high-rep member. Then some nice people gave me high good rep and I was all happy again. Having Chaotic Evil as your rep just makes you look bad. Most people that have that as their rep are pretty nasty characters.

Actually, all mods vote on a particular candidate that have a view to express on that candidate. That can range anywhere from around 10 to up to 80 or so. Depends on the person. And who says if you've been warned before your chances are slim? Most mods have been warned at some point whilst being members, even if only in passing. A fair few have also become moderators after they had been previously banned.

It only becomes an issue for me if you do get banned and decide to bring it up in court. Otherwise I really don't care. But you are posting for the sake of raising your post count, and have been in one of my forums too. I suspect the reason for this is because you were told that you needed 600 posts to be a moderator. Actually the person who told you that is wrong, and you only need 300. So (technically) you qualify. But, and I can't stress this enough- stop trying to be a moderator. That will only decrease your chances and annoy current moderators.

the reason i got the warning is because i posted "dont post this you will get a warning its against the rules" now tell me is that fair?Yes, it is completely fair because it is against the rules. I know, but it shouldn't be everyone's goal to get banned... its not like it would give you a better chance at being a mod, if anything, it hurts your reputation (what people think of you, not those silly numbers) with the moderator community, or at least one would think so much...

yeah, but generally don't people (when they first become mods) follow the rules very closely and attempt to do the best job they can? maybe some kind of mod-probation period? So we should vote on whether they would do a good job as a moderator and totally forget how they act as a member? The member's behaviour is what we base our votes on. It's the behaviour that tells us whether they are ready/mature enough to join the team. Being warned goes against that.
And to add to what Rabid said, a lot of the time we don't personally know the members being voted on. So all we have to go on is the "reputation" gained through their behaviour.

Glad you said "a member". For a second I thought you were talking about me.
Are you supposed to be on the next batch or something?

May 8th, 2005, 04:34 AM
I don't really know, TNO69 (a mod) told me that I'm heading toward modship 2 months ago.
I've said that in the half threads that exist in GW :D

You're not on the next batch, maybe if you speak to him he will give you the details?

I don't know, I feel it's like asking to be mod.Maybe I'll lower my chances this way.I'll think about it.
Just wondering,is Neo on the next batch? The same happened with him (a mod told him the same).
Hah, Neo? I haven't seen him since he was The Matrix and I was The Trainer.
Well, the way to check if he's on the batch is to go to the forum he was supposedly nominated for, and in the forum, there should be a poll posted by Vash saying "X person nominated for mod/co-mod for Y forum". Yeah, something like that.
Oh, and congrats to the mods (who don't care), especially Fable (Now Marwan).
And:
1) I'm in the batch
2) But I'm in on my old name (}{indu |\/|aharaj)

Maybe TNO meant that you were "on the way" as in... "continue like this and you'll be a mod someday".

I'm pretty sure Neo is in the next batch (I remember him being nominated) but I don't remember seing your name kolokotronis. But I think your misunderstood what you were told. The moderator votes for this batch have just gone up- the results won't be out for another week.

So, when can we see the results?
Crazy Jamie
May 9th, 2005, 05:22 AM
When the votes are completed another thread will be made in this forum just like this one, which will contain all of the results from that batch.

Thats what I was thinking too...
Is it just me, or is this batch taking exceptionally long to get out? ... meh, i just remember those months where there was at least 1 vote a month... :-\
Crazy Jamie
May 9th, 2005, 08:44 AM
You're right this batch has taken a while to get out, but to be fair there weren't any nominations for at least a month or so after the last one. Then there was a lot in a short time, and it's just taken Vash a while to get round to putting them up.

Aaah...Whatever...Yes, I've seen the thread Vash posted for Neo.Lucky bastard :D
About the next results,he was talking about the voting, not the results.Sorry, my mistake.I thought they were posted the same day with the voting though.
And TNO said exactly "You're heading toward modship".Nothing more, nothing less.

And TNO said exactly "You're heading toward modship".Nothing more, nothing less. Yes that's definately a statement concerning the possibility of future events. If he recommended you for a vote, he would have said that he had.

Is it always done like that (Vash or whoever announces the results posting a poll in the X forum)?I thought it was only up to the mods.

a month is a while... i'll let this time fly, but next time, i won't stop bitching and you'll have to IP Ban me to get the whining to stop :tease:

I'm going to stress the some comments part, and change we're to "some of us" on that to make it slightly more believable :P

Uh, I'm afraid not. In order for you to be up for co-modding a forum, there needs to be a mod there already. Duh.

You have your ass implanted in GW? You might want to see a doctor about that. Also, being a "typical american teenager" should be a bannable offence. (well, in nine days it should) :P

Um, Beowulf X, Conan O'Brien is the mod of the F-Zero Series forum. At least, for now. (or at the very least, when I posted that)

I've seen that the poll Vash posted for Neo will close on Monday, so I guess the results be announced then (Monday).

Damnit all! I guess more than half of GW shall be banned, and I can't even use the "My country will invade your country" line. But hell, if your country has an abundance of oil, maybe we will, but hopefully we will plant the WMD's before we claim you to have them... :P
