View Full Version : Magic: Card of the Day

Flame
October 6th, 2004, 04:26 PM
Basic Guidelines:

*Nothing overpowered, such as anything on the Banned/Restricted lists.

*Only have one card per day, anyone can post it, but do not post a card two days in a row.

*When you post a card, provide all information about it.

*When you post a card, provide at least two interesting ways to use the card.

I'll post the first card, so you get an idea.

Cursed Monstrocity 4B Rare
Flying
When Cursed Monstrocity becomes the target of a spell or ability, discard a land card from your hand or sacrifice Cursed Monstrocity.
4/3

I traded for these because I've always wanted to taunt someone by killing them with a "bad rare".

My Ideas:
*Terravore
*Crucible of Worlds
*Any of the new CoK cards that involve returning lands to your hand.

Until tomorrow, post any ideas you have for this card. Tomorrow someone else can post a card.

Stone-Tongue Basilisk
4 colorless, 4x Green
4/5

Whenever Stone-Tongue Basilisk deals combat damage to a creature, destroy that creature at the end of combat.

Threshold - All creatures able to block Stone-Tongue Basilisk do so.

Pros:
+Anti-swarm
+fairly big strength
+fairly big toughness

Cons:
-Fairly big cost.

Okay I like this card. It r0x0rs. If your opponent runs a swarm strategy, this thing eats it for breakfast, though it'll most certainly die unless your opponent uses x/0 creatures/tokens but that ain't happening. Lets say your opponent controls 50 1/1 snake tokens and you have STB and I dunno Phage. Now you want that instant win like I want to win the lottery. Stone-Tongue Basilisk attacks, then EVERYTHING tries to block it. Since blocking is part of combat, and everything that can block must do so so everything was in combat with this critter. Okay he fizzles, but so does your entire swarm strategy. No creatures to block so let'em have it with phage or any other uber-beatstick card.

Living Hive
6 colorless, 2 Green

Creature - Elemental

6/6

Trample
Whenever Living Hive deals combat damage to a player, put that many 1/1 green Insect creature tokens into play.

Pros:

+Swarmage
+Trample
+Swarmage is integrated into its trample
+Big

Cons:
-Large cost
-Tokens don't have Haste

Okay this thing is awesome.. The more it hits target player, the more tokens you get. Pump him up a little and you got some crazy swarm going on. It gets progressively worse for your opponent until there are just too many to deal with. He combos well with Stone-Tongue Basilisk as that will give you unparalleled field surpemecy.

I'm not new to MTG.... I retired a long time ago.... inspired by my Losing streak in YGO I'm going to post my cards

I have all the Fourth Edition cards.... they were cheap at the time.... who knew they would get so popular

Serra Angel
Fourth Edition
Color: White
Cost: 3WW
Type: Summon Angel
Pwr/Tgh: 4/4
Card Text: Flying Attacking does not cause Serra Angel to tap.

I have no Idea how powerful cards are supposed to be... but I have only 1 of these, so I thought it might be good

+I'm thinking 4/4 is good
+Not having to Tap might combo with something
+Flying is generally good... I think

-A cost of 5... ouch (I think)

K, I used to play GREEN/Artifact.... oh well... I ruled with my Whip Vine wall... but this card beat me in a Swapped deck match.... that 4/4 was just to high to beat

(BTW, my strongest card is Sandbar Crocodile.... I also have the ORIGINAL Lim Dul.... could someone PLZ review them)

Megrim
(2)(S)

Whenever an opponent discards a card from his or her hand, Megrim deals 2 damage to that player.

I just really like this card

Cage of Hands
Cost: 3
Enchant Creature

Enchanted creature can't attack or block

1W: Return Cage of Hands to its owner's hand.

This card is cool. Creatures can't attack OR block. yay!! They can tap, but they won't be doing much else except look pretty.

Whip Vine

Color: Green
Cost: 2G
Type: Summon Wall
Pwr/Tgh: 1/4
Card Text: Can block creatures with flying. You may choose not to untap Whip Vine during your untap phase.TAP:Tap target creature with flying blocked by Whip Vine. That creature does not untap during its controller's untap phase as long as Whip Vine remains tapped

+Monster Control (I think)

Well.... there's another card.... don't remember.... but if your opponent doesn't attack they recieve 2 damage for every monster that doesn't attack.... lol.... make their crappy 1/1 TAP effect monsters get trapped in this thing.... just make sure you block their FLYERS with this and everything else with Wall of Shadow or something

Ok.... VERY WEAK for a wall, only have 4 life.... but I love its effect.... just trap one of their monsters..... then use some Cards of some sort to take advantage of it.... All in All I'd prefer Wall of Shadows (0/1, does not recieve battle damage, can absorb Trample and LARGE bands this way...)

EDIT:Typos

Hunting Grounds

Color: White/Green
Cost: 1W, 1G
Type: Enchantment
Card text: Threshold — Whenever an opponent plays a spell, you may put a creature card from your hand into play.

I think It's a real stron card In something like an instant deck. Maybe green for giant growths and such and white..sunbeams maybe..along with a few sacrificial creatures and boom threshold is yours..add some huge creatures like krosans and Akroma or so on and your oppenent is pretty much screwed unless he/she can destroy those enchantments..could even have more than one hunting grounds, each spell 2 creatures..nice.

Name: Spellbook
Block: Exodus uncommon
Type: Artifact
Cost: 0

Text:You have no maximum hand size

What can I say it never hurts to have many many opinions open to you

They just brought that Spellbook back in 9th edition and for 0 mana it really is damn good, my friend just got a box of that.

Nanasawa Kimiko
July 30th, 2005, 02:29 PM
Yeah, but what's the point of it then? How often are you going to go over the limit in terms of hand size in T2? Unless, for whatever reason, you have an exuberant amount of Draw, I don't see how it would become useful at all.

Raw Talent
July 30th, 2005, 02:55 PM
Then again they just brought out a few in the set for hand size, howling mine, greater good..Things like that might give you a large hand size but then again there is no reward for it..Sort of pointless.

Nanasawa Kimiko
July 30th, 2005, 02:56 PM
Um... the only real reward it might hold is that it's a free artifact for affinity... yeah... that's about it.

Verashi
July 31st, 2005, 11:45 PM
Spell book... sucks. To say the least. Even Saviors of Kamigawa doesn't have much use for it. Guess I'll do a card.

Gift of Estates 1W
sorcery

If your opponent has more lands than you, serch your library for three plains cards, reveal them, and put them into your hand.

Okay, this card pushes White Weenie in standard a little bit further. Don't get me wrong, with Armaggeddon and/or Cataclysm the deck still doesn't qualify for tier 1 (although the recent addition of Paladin En-Vec is quite lovely). Basically this card is deck thinning for white at it's potential finest. Mono White Control could definately use this card, especially if they draw first. Quite a gem for white players and good to have back in standard.

Nanasawa Kimiko
August 1st, 2005, 01:21 AM
Geez, I can't believe it's back in Standard. WW is going to have a field day.

At least it's not Land Tax though.

Verashi
August 1st, 2005, 08:11 AM
Lol I'd gladly give them Land Tax if they gave us Counterspell back *is a blue mage*. But yeah, without land destruction White Weenie still won't be up to par with say, Mono Green Aggro or Spike deck Alpha (aka Tooth and Nail). However, this card makes Charge Across the Araba ALOT more viable for the deck now. Wow, they may have a decent finisher now.

Nanasawa Kimiko
August 1st, 2005, 12:39 PM
Pft. But since Tooth is cycling, MUC and maybe U/W Control will likely see the most play in my eyes.

Verashi
August 1st, 2005, 02:11 PM
MUC? Not likely. Ninth gives us the hose and mirrodin takes away or card draw. All we have is... magpie... and maybe traumatize. Losing Vedalken Shackles, Bribery, Hibernation, Inspiration, etc. makes me sad. They even took our jank card Intrider Alarm. Now we have... baleful stare, withering gaze, and Battle of Wits... wtf?

Nanasawa Kimiko
August 1st, 2005, 04:31 PM
You still have Keiga and Meloku. What are you worried about?

Verashi
August 1st, 2005, 04:52 PM
Woot. Lol keiga is just a big body. Meloku... I personally don't use it. I know it's blue's finisher but I just don't like it. Meh, I'm not real worried about anything. I'm perfectly fine with doing bi color blue decks (currently running UB). I'm personally not worried. However, the pure blue players are.

Verashi

sorry for the double post. New card:

Yukora, the Prisoner 2BB
Creature- Demon Spirit
When ~ leaves play, sacrfice all non ogre creatures you control.
5/5

MBA loves this card. Some sui black decks love this card. My UB control loves this card. Heck, almost any deck with black in it loves this card. This jusy is a house. If you can drop him turn three (possible with Wayfayer's Bauble) it's pretty much good game. His drawback really doesn't hurt as much as you would think it should. I prefer this card over Kokusho any day.

New Card...

Scythe of the Wretched {2}

Artifact - Equipment

Equipped Creature gets +2/+2.

Whenever a creature dealt damage this turn by equipped creature is put into a graveyard, Return that card to play under your control. Attach Scythe of the Wretched to that creature.

Rare, Mirrodin, Art by Matt Cavotta, #239/306

Now, Pair that card with a Taunting Elf (Onslaught or Urza's destiny) with a Venomous Breath (Ice Age or Mercadian Masques), and you gain control of all creatures all opponents control. Top that off by attaching Scythe of the Wretched to all creatures you gained in that stint. Now you see why I have that in my Elf deck. :D

Verashi
September 23rd, 2005, 10:59 PM
But... the problem with your "combo" is that Scythe can only be attached to one creature at a time. So... only one creature will be equipped with it. No uber brokeness for you! Also, did you not notice the little tidbit that says "Dealt damage by"? That means that you'll only get TWO creatures back with your "combo". Sorry to burst your bubble.

Hmmm... card of the day... How about my old favorite...

Recurring Nightmare
2B
Enchantment

Return Recurring Nightmare to its owner's hand: Sacrifice a creature. Return target creature from your graveyard to play.

FatManBob281
January 9th, 2006, 06:16 PM
hmm, not sure if this one's been done yet, but how about....

Triskelion -6
Artifact Creature

Triskelion comes into play with three +1/+1 counters on it.
Remove a +1/+1 counter from Triskelion: Triskelion deals 1 damage to target creature or player.

He may not be much of a threat by himself, but when paired with a Mephidross Vampire (Fifth Dawn) or 2, he becomes a creature killing machine! Capable of dealing any amount of damage to every creature on the field as soon as it comes into play, among my favorite combos.

Chris G.
January 9th, 2006, 07:20 PM
Heh, here's one of my favorites. I don't know as much about magic as I do yugioh, such as all the cards and whatnot, nevertheless,

Szadek, Lord of secrets,
3UUBB
Legendary Creature-Vampire
If .... would deal combat damage to a player, instead put that many +1/+1 counters on Szadek and that player puts that many cards from the top of his or her library into the graveyard
5/5

Its a pretty decent card if you know your timing well. Combo it with Fling (http://www.cardkingdom.com/images/Stronghold/Fling.jpg) when its 20/20 for a quicker win.

Stryfe

only prob would be a whole bunch of absorb damage cards

Name: Soul Collector
Set: Scourge (rare)
Cost: (3)(S)(S)
Card Type: Creature — Vampire
3/4

Flying
Whenever a creature dealt damage by Soul Collector this turn is put into a graveyard, return that card to play under your control.
Morph (You may play this face down as a 2/2 creature for . Turn it face up any time for its morph cost.)

my friend has a nice deck built around this and I must say I was supirsed how many times this card saved his ass

Hashinator89 v2

Not a bad card at all. Really good in control. Finally, a decent vampire.

Chris G.
August 5th, 2006, 04:24 PM
New one.

Name: Glimpse the Unthinkable
Set: Ravnica (rare)
Cost: (B) (U)
Card type: Sorcery

Target player puts the top ten cards of his or her library into his or her graveyard.

A really broken card. Gets even better if you pair it with Djinn Illuminatus (http://ww2.wizards.com/gatherer/CardDetails.aspx?&id=97197). By the time you get this down, the game is won. Unless they counterspell it of course. My friend always seems to pull a counterspell out of his Onslaught wizard deck...

Ctp
August 6th, 2006, 11:09 PM
You know that a counterspell only stops the first copy if you already have the illuminatus down right? You can't even stifle the replicate ability liek you normally could because it's a static ability of the illuminatus. They can still counter each copy separately though. Or play a swift silence or time stop to counter all of them at once.

Chris G.
August 7th, 2006, 11:19 AM
True, but he counters the illuminatus. :D

Hashinator89 v2
August 7th, 2006, 05:21 PM
But Dijinn Illuminatus is bad. In a mill deck, Glimpse is your MVP along with Mesmeric Orb.

Chris G.
August 7th, 2006, 08:43 PM
Mesmeric orb is a pretty good mill card, I just don't like decking myself in the process, plus I'm tryin to keep it Type 2 for the FNM tourneys I go to. I think I'll post the card I used in the Coldsnap prerelease as CotD.

Name: Braid of Fire
Set: Coldsnap (Rare)
Cost: 1(R)
Card Type: Enchantment

Cumulative upkeep-Add (R) to your mana pool. (At the beginning of your upkeep, put an age counter on this permanent, then sacrifice it unless you pay its upkeep cost for each age counter on it.)

I was happy when I got that one. I usually used it with Balduvian Fallen (http://ww2.wizards.com/gatherer/CardDetails.aspx?&id=121272).

Flame
August 18th, 2006, 10:10 PM
Been a while since I visited here! And to be honest, I only looked at this thread because it had my name on it :P

Limited Resources (http://resources.wizards.com/Magic/Cards/EX/en-us/Card6049.jpg) W
Enchantment
When Limited Resources comes into play, each player choose five lands they control and sacrifice the rest.
As long as there are ten or more lands in play, players cannot play lands.

This is a fun card. A low mana cost will let you get it out early in the game, and with the proper deck, you can strangle your opponent's mana supply. Fallow Earth and Uproot are especially painful after all ten lands have reached the field, allowing you to take one land off the enemy side (and play another of your own, so they cannot replay one) as well as screwing them on the next draw.

Ctp
August 20th, 2006, 05:04 PM
Other good cards would be Fastbond/Exploration/Summer Bloom to help you get 6 or more lands quickly, or Plow Under after it's active at 10 lands.
