Welcome to the Guitarist Alliance of Game Winners!

Hey all, this is my new clan meant for all guitarists and bassists to come and discuss what they can play, give help to each other and begginers, give tabs of riffs that you may have made, and to just chat.

No requirements to join other than the fact that you play guitar or the bass guitar.

Drummers are hard to come by. Not like guitar players; they're a dime-a-dozen. :D

Settle for an adequate drummer. Better than no drummer at all.

Not easy to do when you want to play groove oriented tech metal :-\

You know stuff like Meshuggah meets Between the Buried and Me. Drummers that can groove like that are very hard to find because most of them are already in one or more bands.

Wow, seriously old thread. You made this thing just over 4 years ago? I'm surprised it didn't get trashed. I'd like to join, I play guitar and have been for almost 3 years ago. I play mainly electric now, but I do make my guitar sound acoustic on some stuff I write. I've also been told that the stuff I write sounds like if Godsmack and AIC got together and started writing heavier stuff.

I would like to join, I can't play much, just bits and pieces of various songs And some short and simple tunes of my own. I own an acoustic guitar right now but I plan to get an electric guitar sometime during this Summer.

Well I was looking at getting this Dean Vendetta XM electric guitar I found online at Guitar Center's website, natural finish. Its only 120 bucks and it averages a 5-star rating so I thought it would be good for a first electric guitar.

SS4 Sephiroth
February 22nd, 2008, 08:55 PM
Dean's aren't bad. But honestly if I were you I would go to a local Guitar Center or Sam Ash and try some guitars out. DO NOT ask for help from one of the people that work there, they always try to sell you as much as possible. Try out a few guitars, listen to how they sound, feel, play and so forth; then make your decision from there.

Cody.

Yeah that's more than likely what I'll do first before I buy anything, but that's just what I've got my eyes on right now. Anyone know of any other electric guitars either $150 or cheaper that are decent guitars I could check out? I need a guitar that's going to last until I can afford a better one later on.

I would like to join.

I own a Fender Stratocaster, It's got a black base, with a white cover. My amps a piece of Sh!t but it gets the job done.

I've been playing for about two years and can play only a few songs, Paint it Black(first song I ever learned), Knights of Cydonia, Smoke on water, and Thunderstruck to name a few.

So what tunings does everyone here use? I usually go with either standard or drop D, but I have written a few songs in drop D flat and sharp, and drop C. I've only written 1 or 2 in drop C, but everyone who's heard it says it's heavy as hell.

By the way, if anyone here knows what I need to get songs recorded and uploaded to my myspace profile, let me know. No one around my area seems to know.

Can I join? I own 2 guitars. The first a starter fender squire which sucked. The second is a Jackson, not positive on the model though, but I love it. I've been playing almost 2 years, though I'm not too good.

Considering i have 4 guitars that i play almost all the time i use a bunch of tunings. Right now my ESP 7 string is tuned F Bb Eb Ab Db Gb Bb (half step above standard Bass E) my Ibanez 7 is in standard 7 tunings (BEADGBE) my ESP V-100 is tuned DGCFAD sometimes down to drop C and sometimes Open C (CGCGCE Devin Townsend's favorite tuning) And my Les Paul Standard is tuned Standard E or half step down(half step at the moment)

Does anybody know how much Jackson Randy Rhoads signatures go for, preferably without a tremolo? I've been looking for a guitar without a tremolo bar and the Randy Rhoads model is one of my favorite guitars/guitarists. Also, could anybody reccomend anything other than that without a tremolo, preferably between 200-450ish$? I was thinking about either getting a third guitar (my starter sucks and I want a guitar that doesn't have a locked bridge) or a good amp (mine sucks). Could someone also reccomend a good amp? I don't know much about them, but I want good distortion and the effect where loud notes and quiet notes sound the same dynamics.

SS4 Sephiroth
February 25th, 2008, 10:27 PM
Wait so you want an amp with no dynamics to it? If so get a Line 6 Spider. If you want an amp with a lot of dynamics get a tube amp. Or do like i did and get a power amp head, 4x12 cab and a Line 6 POD X3 Live =D

Good guitar for 200-450, almost any Schecter in that range, my Les Paul standard was about 4 and is one of the best guitars i own. Try one out.

Spiner202
February 25th, 2008, 10:32 PM
I want an amp that has the ability to make most notes sound the same dynamic. For example when I play harmonics, you can barely hear them, but my guitar teacher said that you can get amps where they can even things out. But I'd also like to be able to turn that off.

Also for a guitar, I'd prefer a jackson or an ibanez. Other brands are fine, but those two I'd prefer.

WTF d00ds?
February 25th, 2008, 10:51 PM
If you want a guitar in the $200-$450 range, I'd suggest either an Epiphone, or an Ibanez. The Ibanezs will be a little pricier, but they're worth it. I own 2 (an ARC350, and an SZ520QM), and I absolutely love them. I use the 520QM almost exclusively now, as I like the sound it produces better, but I still use the 350 from time to time.

I've heard good things about ESP. My brother (he's a really good guitarist) said it's the only type of guitar he doesn't own that he really wants. Also I know a lot of great guys use them like the guys in Metallica/Megadeth.

Have any of you learned how to play any theme songs on guitar? I just figured out how to play the Batman theme song and a part of the Spider-Man theme song yesterday, Its pretty cool and really easy :)

Spiner202
February 26th, 2008, 07:58 PM
I wanted to learn the King Of The Hill theme but I'm not good enough :(. Otherwise, I find it hard to find tabs of songs that I don't know the band/isn't done by a particular band.

SS4 Sephiroth
February 26th, 2008, 08:30 PM
I've learned plenty. I actually have a collection of Final Fantasy 7 midi/tabs that i play every now and then, they are very fun.

Cody.
February 26th, 2008, 11:41 PM
Yeah, we didn't use any tabs, my friend has the Batman ringtone on his cell phone, so we used its as a guide to help us find the right tune. And we just decided to figure out Spider-Man theme after that. So they probably don't sound like the real deal but hey, it works. :D

SS4 Sephiroth
February 26th, 2008, 11:52 PM
I rarely use tabs. But i keep the FF7 ones around because they are general midi which can be used in recording. And i plan to record some heavy metal versions of some of the FF7 songs some day :)

February 27th, 2008, 04:11 PM
It comes with time. I started figuring stuff out relatively early on, but after about 3 years or so i was really picking stuff up well and getting it right most of the time.

Cody.
February 27th, 2008, 08:03 PM
Yeah it took us a bit to figure out both of those themes but after awhile it just sorta clicked. Not to mention my friend has been playing guitar for at least two years now so, I used him as a reference as well. :D

I can play the tetris theme perfectly (I use some killer distortion/delay, and it sounds sick when I play it), part of the mario bros. theme, the twilight zone theme, the opening riff to dueling banjos, and the main riff in "Turning Japanese", but I dunno if that's a theme or not.

Also, I've developed a far better musical ear myself as well. I learned the opening riff to dueling banjos by ear, as well as a few other parts of songs (the main riffs to smoke on the water- I play it in drop D, and the main riff to Iron Man, also in Drop D), as well as a multitude of other various riffs.

The tetris theme is easy as hell, it only took me about 5 minutes to learn, and an hour to perfect. The mario bros theme is slightly harder, I still can't do all of it yet. If you know how to read tabs, an excellent site for them is ultimate-guitar.com. In fact, it's the only site I use. They have tabs for any song you could think of (almost a million tabs in total), and for any kind of guitar you can think of (bass, 7 string, 12 string, etc.). And if you want to learn the twilight zone theme, it's only played on the high e string in standard tuning, and goes like this:

3-4-3-0-3-4-3-0-3-4-3-0-3-4-3-0 (this continues for however long u like)

SS4 Sephiroth
February 29th, 2008, 09:04 PM
I actually find it more out there to play it like this

e-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0--------
B-3-4-3-0-3-4-3-0--------

Makes it sound a bit creepier by going from a major second to a minor second to a 4th.

I can read some tabs, but I have a hard time understanding power chords and slides on some tabs. But I've got my dad teaching me how to understand/read those kinds of tabs though.

Here's the tab for Spider-Man that I and my friend made up:

E ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
B -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
G ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D -------------------------------------------5-3------------------------------------------------------
A ---------5-3---------4-5-5-5-3 0-----3-6-----6-3-------5-3------5-5--5-3-0-3-0------------
E ---3-6--------6-3-3----------------3---------------3-6------- - 6-3-------------------3--------

Hopefully thats legible, Its kinda hard typing up tabs on GW.

If you don't have it yet, I would highly suggest investing in Guitar Pro. It has literally made me such a better player than I would be without it. It has both the tabs and the notes so it's easy to read, and you can turn one or the other off if you like. If can basically take any instrument and you can write your own music for the instruments. As well as downloading tabs for it. I would say it's definately worth it :).

I compose everything in GP5. It's especially easy for programming drums. Makes it so much easier for someone like me who writes pretty much polyrhythmic drum parts for everything. Not to mention its easier to work with the tempos and note durations. Export a midi of the track and import right into my DAW, route through EZdrummer and i have a drum track to record to! =D

Even though I don't really write any music, I love just taking some instruments into GP and just messing around. I especially love making up drum beats because you can do so many things. I really wish that there were a few more options for drums, even though I know nothing about them.

SS4 Sephiroth

Meshuggah is the number one influence right now. Opeth is right there as well. Porcupine Tree is a definite influence. More recently Queens of the Stone Age have got me trying some different stuff (for me at least)

Also random bands. I get a lot of influence just from bands i hear on the internet.

I'm the same way, seph, it's just that Godsmack and AIC are my 2 biggest influences, and all my friends have told me that it's obvious in my playing style. My only other friend who listens to LoG has told me he can detect some influence from them in it too.

My main influence would have to be my dad really, other than that, rock in general has inspired me to play the kind of music I play.

Spiner202
March 3rd, 2008, 07:57 PM
I wouldn't say that I really have an influence since I don't create my own music, but if you were to say bands that influenced me to pick up a guitar, then definately Metallica seeing as they were the first band I really listened to. But I would consider Alice Cooper, HammerFall, Iron Maiden, & Metallica to be the most important bands to my guitar playing.

If you play guitar, calling someone "dog" isn't really the right term of endearment. Anyway, has anyone learned to play "Thunderhorse", by Dethklok (technically it's by Brendan Small, but w/e)? I've started to learn it and it's a helluva lot harder than it sounds. I've gotten Awaken down pretty good though, except for the solo.
