View Full Version : Pop-ups going away
GameWinners.com
November 14th, 2003, 04:36 PM
As most of you are aware, we had to resort to pop-up ads to help pay for the forums when online advertising declined awhile back, as did other large message boards such as EZboard were forced to do. Fortunately, new types of advertising have grown recently, and have reached the point where we can significantly reduce the number of pop-ups you will see when browsing the forums.
Effective later today, all pop-ups will be removed from pages where you are reading posts or topics. You will still see a pop-up after posting a message, but I am hoping to eliminate, or at least severly limit these as well as advertising revenues continue to improve. Keep in mind that it costs $2,000.00 monthly to host our servers, and this is the only way to keep things going free without going to some sort of subscription plan.
In order to remove the pops, three changes are being made.
-Highlighted keywords. You've probably already seen these in various posts here, as well as on other large game sites such as IGN. Certain keywords, such as PS2, Pokemon, etc. may be double underlined in posts. We get paid a few pennies whenever someone highlights that word and clicks on the advertiser's link that appears. If you see something that you are interested in, please check it out, as it will help keep those pop-ups away.
-As also seen on big game sites such as IGN, I am replacing the standard "banner" ad at the top part of the pages with large square ads.
-Finally, as also featured on IGN and other big sites, you may see an "interstitial" ad when first accessing a forum page. An interstitial is basically a transition page that shows an ad before you click to continue to the forums. These are limited to only one appearance per day per user, and may not appear for visitors coming from outside the US or Canada.
I think everyone will agree that the changes are worth the effort to keep the site free, as well as a great first step to get rid of those pop-ups. No one, including myself, liked them, but were forced to live with them in order to keep things running. Once again, I'd like to thank everyone that weathered our "pop-up" crisis, and stuck with us. Thanks guys!

Better than pop-ups, I don't like the square ad thing though. Still much better without the large-assed number of pop-ups though, the green underlined thingies are barely noticeable.:D

Yeah, Al. This is awesome. Keep up the good work.:^:
P.S. I just realized that a pop-up ad usually comes up when you click the "get more" link on the "smilies" inset. Not really a big difference, just something I noticed.

Speaking of that, I'd just like to inform you, that the ad, only appears as a totally grey box for me. It might just be my computer or some program I have on it, but it never shows up.

popups, what are these popups you speak of?
seriously though, you all need to catch up with this millenium and stop using crappy browsers that let popups through. Anything that's not IE or AOL will do the trick

I realize how much this helps a ot of people, with the pop-ups messing up their computers a lot, so I'm glad this was done because I remember those pop-ups. [ad=aol]That was before I used the AOL Pop-Up Blocker!! It works fine, I havn't had a single pop-up since!! (with the exception of those damn messenger service ones)
Luckily I also havn't experienced the grey boxes, but that doesnt really relieve me because I've never seen their crappiness.
Anyways, I was wondering how you are supposed to make $2,000 a month if not many people like clicking the green links, and the few times they get clicked it only gives you a few pennies.
My school uses Mozilla, I don't find it all that great, it really doesn't block the pop-ups, but maybe thats because my school doesnt have a blocker set on?

I know a good pop-up blocker you just go to www.google.com and download their pop-up blocker it's free and it adds another toolbar and if you need to search for anything you can type what you want to search for and it will take you to their website with the results of what you want.

ok that is cool because(and i have to explain this)
im useing 550access browser its an awsome browser way way better then IE but the pop up blocker it has also blocks the "get more smiles" window
and it could be the browzer but there was one pop up not the add kind but the kind that wants to install some lame crappy crap on your computer and when ever i said no(and i always did) it would CLOSE the window and that sucked
so i say thanx a TRILLION KABILLION EXFIKINZILLION for scrapping those popups

That's because it's not an actual ad blocker. They label it as an ad blocker, but, in reality, it just blocks the Javascript code that makes popup windows. Real ad blockers block ad servers.
