After seeing a few posts like "Have you read this book? Can you give me a summary?" , we have came to a decision. These topics ain't helping you, and it ain't helping us. So, Banting and I have decided that these topics will not be allowed.
I know... it's hard to draw the line between helping and doing, but you guys know the difference. One is trying to do it, but don't get some parts of the question, the other one is just too lazy and leave it up to us. Banting and I will close all topics that we feel is "doing" instead of "helping", so this is just a small notice.
This is just a small change to the forum. I hope you guys will be able to fully utilize this forum with the current rules. If you have any questions, you can post them here. If you guys feel I have caused any inconvenience, feel free to post your opinions in here also!
Good luck to you all!

"why read all those confusing sentances, when I can have someone sum it all up for me?" soo... is that basically the concept behind why the "have your read this" thing has been banned?

well. from my experience as a former middle school and high school student, i was frustrated not having solutions posted in the book. the reason being i needed to check my answers. if there werent slutions..how could i have possibly know if my theoretical applications are wrong?
so basically i would like to work a problem then consult the answer when im finished. then compare and see what i did wrong vs right.
so that should justify us giving answers sometimes to folks on here.
its a real headache when i was a lad. i wanted straight answers to my problems and non any fandango. i believe if the kids have the solution..they could take it back with their friends, discuss it...and possibly revise it under their teachers supervision.

Ok- but there are a few problems with that.
First- this really doesn't apply to all subjects. Any papers you have to write, or book you have to read, isn't something you would normally "check the answer" on.
Second- If you've done the work, there isn't a single (highschool/elementary, tougher when you hit college) teacher who wouldn't be delighted to check your answers for you (and probably boost your class participation grade, if you have one).
Third- if they have the answer to the question, they can post the question and say, "and this is the answer I got:" and post that as well. Then, it becomes a question of having people check their answer, rather than give it to them. That would require minimal effort on their part... so I don't think it's a problem, and I am sure threads like that won't be closed ^_^
Textbooks can be pretty stupid- what is the idea with only posting odd-numbered answers? And why make people dig through the back of the book to find them? When I make textbooks, all the answers will be right on that page. While I've had books like this, they've been few and far between.
I find especially in math, it's tough to match my answer with the books answer anyway (especially things involving trig. There are so many IDs, and so many different ways to work those problems... and the book writers so often seem to choose the most difficult way) so I would much rather have a teacher or friend check the work.
I definately see your point, and it is definately frustrating... but there are ways around that frustration.

Hey I have a question for you that I need answered. Do you think I can make a fourm that has a dictionary(like when ppl need to spell a word right or if they need a def. for something..... maybe) Just a question. :D

Wouldn't it be better just to, oh I don't know, look in a dictionary!

So, if someone has like a math problem, tries the question and then posts a thread saying: "This is the question .... I got this answer ..... Can someone tell me if it's right and if it's wrong tell me why"
Is that kinda stuff still ok?

Whee, where is Glamiss? :D
It would have been okay. It's pretty obvious who are here looking for explanations and those who just want people to do their homework. Usually if they have a list of similar math problems, we teach them how to do it once, and let him/her do the rest.
Hope that clears up. :)
After 3 months you got your reply Nienke. :chuckle:

Hopefully this helps draw the line between helping and doing... Helping is simply telling them how to do it and clarifying things for the person. Doing is just giving them the answer...

Ah its quite simple, we have special 'upside down' shoes which make us stick to the earth instead of falling off, thats why the shoe sizes are different (European, UK, US etc.) and in the event of our shoes failing, there are big nets across the cities all attached to the powerlines so we don't fall far. :D

Okay what crawled up your asses? what do you care if we ask someone to do our homework? It's not like our teachers are going to sue you or anything. This whole web site is based on cheating. If someones willing to wright me a papper or give me a summarry so what? let em! I'm not making anyone do my homework the only people who would respond to these post are the people who are willing to do my homework. I know It's wrong but so what it's not your problem. I think these moderaters should be a little more layed back, just let us talk about what we want and let people think it's a stupid thing to say. Just beacause you guys had to do the Football players homework or you'd get beat up, doesn't mean that you have to ruin it for every one. Cause no ones beating anyone up or giving wegies or swirlies ect. We're just asking for a little boost.

Unlike "video game integrity" (if such a thing exists), academic integrity has direct real-world implications that affect you and everyone around you. So the comparison on this site between video game cheating and homework cheating is somewhat weak... Also, it absolutely is our business, since we're the ones people would be asking to cheat for them, and that affects our integrity as much as it does theirs. Anyway, if we were so used to doing the "football players homework" then I am sure we would be more comfortable with the situation, wouldn't we?

Your spelling is atrocious; it makes me wonder how much attention to detail you give to other things. But if you were used to doing your homework and working to overcome your own "it's ok to just get by" attitude, then you'd understand already. It'll become especially apparent once you make it into higher levels of school and eventually work. Most of my coworkers don't bother to read the simplest of emails, and then they come and bother me asking me for help on the exact same thing I just emailed them instructions for. There are also a few of them who can't spell worth anything, like you, and NO ONE understands them when they ask for help; it's like they're almost physically incapable of forming coherent sentences in anything other than speaking, as if they're from a pre-literate society (6000 or 7000 years old).
So what we're saying here is, it's up to YOU to learn how to learn. It's not up to US to give you work so you can coast by. Help is one thing, doing completely is another entirely.
Besides, if you had read the first post in the thread, you'd see why and wouldn't have had to ask!
The thread was left open for general comments, not for people to bitch & moan.
