View Full Version : Signature Rules - Images/Size/Content/Links/Glow (Read this or lose your signature)

You must be registered for at least two weeks before you can have a signature.
Rules concerning images in signatures
Now that images are becoming most commonly used in signatures, the limits need to be covered here. All of the dimensions of an image can be seen by right-clicking on the chosen image and selecting properties.
These are the maximum dimensions for an image:
- 500 pixels wide
- 160 pixels high
- Filesize of 25kb (25600 bytes)
Those conditions can only be met if just one image is used, otherwise it will push the signature over the limit.
-Should a line of text be present above or beneath the image, the maximum height of the image is 140 pixels.
(With an image that is 140 pixels high, you can have one line of either size 1, 2 or 3 text under it.)
-Should there be more than one image (A maximum of 5 images are allowed in one signature), the combined filesize must not exceed 25kb (25600 bytes), the combined horizontal width must not exceed 500 pixels and the vertical height of the images must not exceed 160 pixels.

Any Sig should be no longer that the first example, regardless of Size, Font or whatever. 10 lines Normal text is the standard and benchmark.
20 lines in small text is NOT the equivalent. 13 lines in small text would be the maximum in direct comparison (and that's stretching it a bit).
Edit-Addendum: An easy way to self-test is to take a small piece of paper, place it up against the first example in Normal text and mark the upper and lower limits. Then compare those marks against your own or anyone's Sig. Simple and effective.
Edit-Amendment: The Administrator has invoked a new mandate concerning the limitation of the amount of glow strength effect permissible. Effective immediately, the maximum SIG glow strength is 15. If you use double-glow, the total of BOTH must not exceed a total of 15. Use of a higher setting is subject to warning and/or ban, dependent on conduct record. Grateful for everyone's co-operation and compliance.

General Signature Rules
~~Contributed by Surfr~~
Signature Length
Signatures are limited to a length of 10 lines of normal sized (default) text.
Here is a table showing all of the text sizes and their limit of lines allowed:
Text heights in pixels, kindly provided by Neo Matrix (http://forums.gamewinners.com/forums/member.php?u=9076)
Signature limit = 160 pixels
Number of size 1 lines = 13 -> 160/13 = 12.3 pixels (13)
Number of size 2 lines = 10 -> 160/10 = 16 pixels
Number of size 3 lines = 9 -> 160/9 = 17.8 pixels (18)
Number of size 4 lines = 7 -> 160/7 = 22.9 pixels (23)
Number of size 5 lines = 5.5 -> 160/5.5 = 29.1 pixels (30)
Number of size 6 lines = 4 -> 160/4 = 40 pixels
Number of size 7 lines = 2.5 -> 160/2.5 = 64 pixels
Just to point out, this list is for pure text signatures only, not for sigs that involve images.
Here is the length, so that you may check your signature. The easiest way to do this is to take a small piece of paper and mark, on the paper, where both lines are. Then place the paper next to your signature. If your signature fits between the two lines, you're fine. If not - back to the drawing board, creative, yet long winded one.
Tall smileys often take up more than one line as well.
If a Moderator contacts you asking you to change your signature, please do so immediately. You are required to change your signature within 24 hours of receiving the message. Failure to do so will first result in a signature reset, then the entire signature gone for one month, and finally, for the third offence: permanent signature deletion and possibly a visit from unsavory individuals steeped in the lore of the Inquisition and having practical experience with time-tested torture techniques.
Signature Content
Signatures follow the same content guidelines as posts. These rules are often referred to as the "Bumper Sticker Rule." Whereas, if you wouldn't see it on a Bumper Sticker while chasing cars through your neighborhood, it's not allowed in your signature.
Links to sites outside GameWinners.com are not permitted in signatures - at all. Please use the field provided in your profile to create an outside link which is accessible through the 'www' icon at the bottom of all your posts.
Miscellaneous
Glow - Using the glow effect in your signature is permitted. However, its limited to a strength of 15. Double-glow is allowed, but not triple, quadruple, quintuple, etc., glow. Double-glow is cumulative and may not exceed 15, total.
EDIT: The author of this post is in no way responsible for any inappropriate sarcasm where unnecessary. That would be me. ~Mk

I've gotton a tip that one of my past sigs was over the file size limit, but from what I saw, it seemed like it fit it.
this one is around 14,000, and the limit is what, around 25,000, so I'm sure this fits, but then again, my test one appearently didn't, according to another member.
I'm really getting tired of asking, but I've got no other choice...I think you are mixing pixels and Kilobytes.
Use the one FM resized and you'll be fine.

I'd suggest finding another image, animations end up being too big of a file. That or only use one frame, but I wouldn't know which one you'd want.
As for the earlier discussion about my being demodded, I'll clear it up for you all since there seems to be some confusion and I've already been PMed about it once. It was for account sharing, which for the record posed zero risk to the site or I would have never done it, but the admins did not see it my way.:tease:

No, you haven't yet. Your CT still says "New User." Once that says "Registered User" click the Quick Links dropdown menu on the login/out bar at the top of your page. Then Edit Signature. Just put whatever you want in there. remember: 10 lines of regular (size 2) text or 13 lines of size 1 text, use tags for images and make sure the pic is withing the limits (160 HIGH; 500 WIDE; max filesize 25KB).

VolantKnave
January 4th, 2007, 04:51 PM
Rule #1: Don't put a signature in your signature before asking if it's alright.
This image does not just contain an outside link, but it's also well over the filesize limit. You better remove it.
I'm not 100% sure about the rules on outside links on gamercards, but I think the official gamercards (using the [gamercard] tag) are the only ones that are safe to use, along with Xfire profile images. 'Unofficial' cards count as regular images, I believe.
CounterBlow
January 4th, 2007, 06:57 PM
You can use "Unofficial" cards, as long as they are below the filesize limit and do not contain an outside link. The only links you can have in your sig are links to your Xbox account or Xfire account (Or a place within GW)
The reason your's is considered an outside link is because it shows: "XBOX LC.com" Not a link to your OFFICIAL Xbox or Xfire account.
Consider yourself lucky it hasn't been deleted yet. Mine was deleted within 3 minutes of me adding it to my sig. :(

No bandwidth leeching: This refers to those of you who directly link to an image hosted by a site that is neither owned by you nor is a free hosting source. For instance, linking to a Simpsons image hosted on the FOX website. There are plenty of free hosting websites you can use if you do not own your own server, such as www.imageshack.com and www.photobucket.com.

I am unable to post this (http://www.esnips.com/doc/5edfcd35-9b2f-47fd-beab-10ef3d20a4ea/Kyuubi_ff_sig) as my sig. As you can see, it plainly conforms to all specifications. Yet, the system still informs me that the file is too large. Are there any restrictions on what site hosts the image file?

Try http://www.esnips.com/nsdoc/5edfcd35-9b2f-47fd-beab-10ef3d20a4ea. However you should probably get the URL at the bottom removed. It's small and blurred, but I can still tell there's one there.
There aren't any site-by-site restrictions; it either has to be one that provides a hosting service or one you own yourself.

Question: Is there a program that I can get or use to automatically shrink pictures to the correct length/width for a sig?

I don't know of any that do it automatically. If you're using something like PhotoShop, GIMP or Paint.NET it's very easy to set the dimensions and adjust the filesize when you save your image, but you have to do it manually.

So, I just have a question about Signatures then. If I (as a new member can't use one for 2 weeks from my date of registering, if I make one in this section to test it, after the 2 weeks have passed I should be able to copy & paste my test signature if that's what I'm going to use into the section of my profile where I create my real signatures?
So I just make a thread here with my signature so that a mod can check it & make sure it's OK & it stays here for those 2 weeks & then I'll be able to make one? I only make text signatures anyway, 3 double-spaced lines at the most (usually, maybe sometimes I add a 4th line of text but not always) so I wish I didn't have to wait. I almost never ever use images in my signature, & I'm not someone who creates accounts anywhere just for the heck of it or to spam websites unnecessarily. Is there any chance someone knows & could let me know if anyone normally can maybe be granted an exception if they prove that they aren't like most of the registerees who I'm assuming made this limitation or rule necessary in the first place?
I think I know what I might be told, but still ... I really always get very aggravated and angry about when a few (or sometimes many people) do something dumb or pointless and ruin something for everyone & create a problem that a rule(s) needs to be created to make sure that they can't do what they did before; while making people who aren't like that suffer because of it.
I personally hate that with such a passion that if I could make this world a better place so these measures would never be necessary for as many of the things people have done in the past & currently that create these kinds of situations, then I'd hope that any/all company(ies)/whatever would abolish the rules they'd set up because they'd trust they aren't needed anymore.

Your thread will remain here as a reference for as long as possible. Unfortunately it isn't possible to make individual exceptions to the rule as that would create a precedence that would be very difficult to deal with.

Thanks anyway Matt, that's what I though.
