Here are just some random things that might be helpful:

If you are doing a long sentence with a fade that doesn't have enough tags, color the letters in groups of two instead of putting just one tag per letter. You can do this all the time to speed things up if you like.
Copy and paste the tag, and fill in what you need to speed things up...if you are only changing two digits, then copy and paste the other four that stay the same. You can copy and paste the tag instead if you rather.
If you are fading a bunch of lines (such as a 13 line sig), put a bunch of spaces in front of each line of code. Multiple spaces (or any spaces at the beginning of a line) don't show up on GW and it shows you where each line begins at ends at a glance. This way you can easily insert/erase a line or find a typo without having to search through pages and pages of code.
If you are fading a short line, you can make the fade show up more by skipping some numbers. For example, instead of doing FF4400 FF5500 FF6600 FF7700 FF8800 you could do FF4400 FF6600 FF8800. This is handy when you are fading somebody's username or doing a short vertical fade.
Make the fade so you can read what the text says!! If you are doing a light/bright colored fade (yellow, white, bright green or blue) add some black glow so you can read it. You can just put it on strength one so it's not very noticeable. If black glow makes the colors look bad (which it can and often does) play around with other colors until you find something that works or do a different fade.
I said this in the vB code section, but it's important and I doubt most of you read it so I'm going to say it again. Always, always, ALWAYS put spaces between opening tags. [glow] ... notice the spaces? If you don't put them there, the colors will be funky, and you won't have a clue why!
This one Mayhem came up with: Instead of just copying [color= or , copy [/color]If you are using more simple fades...like...aqua blue to light aqua blue, use glow strength 1, in black or blue. It will make the fade look smooth and cool. When using silver fades (808080 to e0e0e0) use a strength 1 glow, blue, or black. The fade will look cool.
When fading simple fades, like orange to yellow, blue to dark blue, etc. Use strength 1 and glow black. The fade looks more alive.
If you are using more complicated fades...like...orange to blue...or something like that...Don't use strength 1 glows, the fade will look kinda dead. Use No glow, or big glow. Thanks Icky!
I've noticed that light colors (pink, light purple, yellow, orange, light blue, etc) don't look good with strength 1 glow black glow.. some people use it so you can see it better, but you should either make the colors dark enough to read easily or use stronger glow. Otherwise it messes up the colors and they don't have the same look.

I always have two ascii pictures when fading. Then I can have the first as a model when fading the second. (Note from mandy: This works with words as well, and you can use the preview reply as your "model.")
When fading a long row (especially with the same symbol), it is easier to do the fade first (just see where
the middle is) and then put in the symbols, like --- insert new color, and then put the symbols between and

Mayhem's generating system

I didnt actually "find" a vB generater.... I created it out of different programs.

Descriptions at the bottom.

Go to a website and find any html fader.... (this works with any html fading site) Different sites have some extra added things in there... you can always delete these.

I use a varity:

This is a great one to try out...

Go to Notepad 1 (or MS word2, or MS WordPad3....), Press Ctrl + H4 (Ctrl + F5 for MS word2, then click the replace tab6)

In the bold is what you will need to put in the "Replace" areas.

First replace Font (make sure there is a space at the end!!!!!! If you do not put a space at the end then it will replace the wrong thing. Make sure you do this step first.) with nothing at all. (remember to click "Replace All".)

Then replace Font(no space at the end!!!) with Color.(remember to click "Replace All".)

Then replace < with [.(remember to click "Replace All".)

Then replace > with ].(remember to click "Replace All".)

got it?

Shhh... its a secret... (but even a dumb bunny could have figured this out...)
Now, if you do that in about 2 minutes, i'm sure you could do a book in 2 minutes.

1. Notepad is a writing tool. This is the most common on all computers. Even windows 3.1 has this.

2. This is also very common. You can find both these programs in the start menu.

3. This is availible to newer computers. It is also under the common name "Microsoft Works".

4. This is pressing the "Control" button and the "H" button at the same time. By doing so it will pop up a window that is named "Replace" Here is where you need to replace the right things with the other right things. *NOTE: You must replace what I told you above IN THAT ORDER. Other-wise it will not work and you will end up with s crap load of words.

5. Microsoft Word is slightly different than Microsoft Wordpad or Notepad. You must press "Control" and the "F" button at the same time in order to get where you need to. This will pop up a "Find" window. You will see a "Replace" tab beside the "Find" tab(explained below).

6. This is found right beside the "Find" tab. When pressing this tab you will find that it is almost exactly like MS Wordpad or Notepad.

Theres 256 colours there. experiment to get others. change the values to anything in the hexidecimal number system:

Remember though, the first two together make up the red, the middle two make green and the last two, on the right, make blue.

So if you want more green (try aquamarine for example), then always have a fairly high number in the green. Have fun!

Heres another tip.

Decimal is how we count. its called base-10, because there are 10 digits.

0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9.

therefore, we start at 0 count through the system, then iincrease the left hand column by one, as I'm sure you are aware.

Hexidecimal is base-16, so there are 16 numbers.

now, lets compare. I'll count to 20 in both number bases.

0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20

0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, A, B, C, D, E, F, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 (This is 20 in hexidecimal), 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E, 1F, 20

therefore, to count from 0 to 99 in base 10, in base 16 you could count to from 0 to 255 with the two digits. 256 is an important number in computers, but thats going into unnecessary theroy and technical crap that I cant be bothered with at half past midnight.

Right. so thats how you count in hexidecimal.


now, your color code comprises of 6 digits. this will cover every minute change of shade for every color.

you have 000000 - which is one color
you have 000000 which is another color and...
you have 000000 which is your third color.

These are not the primary colors, they are, though, the three colors that the computer monitor make use of. RGB. Red, Green and Blue.

Just like painting really, but from a rainbow perspective (IE, mix lots of colours (3 in this case, at full strength), and you don't get murky brown, but white.

Sooo....... each color has 256 steps in its spectrum. mix red and blue to make purple

that was 99 red 99 blue and 00 green. change the strengths to get different shades of purple.

Learn to fade

Seen all those cool faded sigs and wish you could make one of your own? You've come to the right place! I'm going to cover everything you need to know to be able to fade, which will include everything from the basics of vB code to hex codes to different methods you can use. Even if you already know how to fade, you might find something useful you didn't know!

vB Code
VB code is really simple and won't be at all hard to learn! To do anything special to your text (change the size, make it bold/underlined, add color) you have to use what are called tags. Let's say you want to make your text orange, type in front of it. It's as easy as that! Want bold? Type . Simple, isn't it? But, what if you only want some of your text bold? That's where the closing tags come in. Let's say you want to type "mandy is so cool!" with the word "so" being bold. You would put mandy is [b]so cool! All closing tags have a / then the main part of the tag. Let's say you wanted to close the tags: You'd use: You can add any color in where it says orange BTW, I just use that as an example. Even if you want the tag to apply to the whole post, you still need to close it at the end, or it gets very confused and won't work. That's very important... you must close every single tag! Oh, and if you have multiple tags in a row... for example: [color=orange]Text here. There are a few things you should know. One, if you don't put spaces between all of the opening tags (that would be the first group) then it sometimes doesn't work. I don't know why, but just trust me on this, put spaces in between them! You also need to close them in the opposite order you opened them... since I put the glow tag first, I put the close glow tag last. I have seen lots of people not do this and it can cause problems.. so just try to remember! The only tag you need for fading is the color tag, but I just thought I'd throw in the rest since a lot of times it looks better centered and it's just good to know.

Hex Codes
Using color names is great if you want all your text one color, but if you want it to fade you have to use hex codes. They let you change the color a little bit at a time so it appears that one color is slowing changing to another. So what exactly are hex codes you ask? It's a six digit number that represents colors. I know, numbers that mean colors, it's bizarre! Well, you know you can make any color from mixing three colors, right? On the computer that would be red, green and blue. Well, the hex code lets you tell the computer how much of each color you want to add to the mix. The first two digits (000000) are for red, the second two (000000) are for green, and the last two (000000) are for blue. The counting system you use is different then what you are used to. Instead of having just 10 digits (0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9) it has 16. Of course, there's only 10 numbers, so we have to borrow some letters and just pretend they're numbers. So instead of just the digits 0-9, you have 0-9 plus A, B, C, D, E, F. You still count the same, just with extra digits. (In case you haven't quite followed this, that'd be like 00, 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 0A, 0B, 0C, 0D, 0E, 0F, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 1A, 1B, and so on... and when you get to 9F, you would go to A0.) You always use two digits, so even if you just want the number 1 you have to put a zero in front as a place marker. Just like if you wanted to say you had $.01, you'd include a zero. You use this number system and the 6 digit codes to tell the computer (or browser or whatever decodes this stuff) how much of each color you want. So, 000000 would be black since it has no color at all. FFFFFF would be white, since it has a full amount of all of the colors. FF0000 would be bright red, 00FF00 would be bright green and 0000FF would be bright blue You can use different amounts of colors... 008800 would be a darker green. The higher the number, the brighter the color.(I always use double numbers to make things easier for me... 008700 wouldn't look that different, but as you can imagine, it's a lot easier to understand this way). If you want to make a secondary color, just add both of the appropriate colors. FFFF00 would be yellow (red plus green) FF00FF would be purple (red plus blue.. although it's so bright it might look a bit pink) and 00FFFF would be greenblue. Grey is equal numbers of all the colors... the higher the numbers the closer it is to white. 888888 would be about halfway between black and white. Orange is a trickier color.. you need a bit more red than green so it doesn't turn yellow. FF7700 is a nice orange. Once you know what color you want, just put it where you'd usually put the color name, like:

Basic Fading
Now that you know how hex and vB codes work, you have to learn how to do the actual fading. Basically, you color every character a slightly different shade. So if you wanted to fade the phrase "Hey look, I can fade!" from black to red, you'd start by making the "H" black (000000) then adding a little bit of red to the "e" (110000), some more to the "y" (220000) and so on.

Finished, the code would look like this: [color=000000]Hey [colo=330000]look, I canfade!

And the result would look like: Hey look, I can fade!

You might notice that I colored the "e" and the "!" at the end the same color... I ran out of colors so I didn't have much of a choice... if it's just one character then you can get away with that, but if you have 5 or 10 extras, then you have to spread them more evenly. Well anyway, that's a black to red fade... any fade containing black works pretty much the same way, you just change the placement of the numbers. Now let's try a blue to green fade on the same sentence (Hey look, I can fade!), shall we? Start out with the "H" being all blue (0000FF) then make the "e" have a little bit more green AND take away some blue (0011EE), and for the "y" continue the pattern (0022DD) and so on.

Finished, the coding would look like this: Hey look, I can fade!

And the finished product would look like this: Hey look, I can fade!

The whole key to fading is finding a pattern between the two colors you want to fade. Gradually add in the color you are changing to and, if necessary, take out the old color. You can do 3, 4, 5, etc. color fades in the same fashion... just take it one part at a time.

Other Fades
Just going from one color to another is great, but sometimes you want to do something different. A lot of people use a centered fade... it gives you more codes and tends to look better on longer sentence. Let's try fading "Why is abbreviation such a long word?" red to blue to red. The first thing you need to do is count how many letters there are (You can skip spaces since you can't color them, or count them if you want it better centered... I usually just skip them.) and then divide it in half. You can put a * or | so you remember where it is.. if there's an odd number then put the symbols on both sides of the middle letter. But remember to take them out after you fade! The sentence "Why is abbreviation such a long word?" has 31 characters...half of 31 is 15 ?, so the 16th letter is the middle one. So the middle letter is the "O" in "abbreviation". So now we do a red to blue fade until we get to the middle.

Another kind of fade is....well it doesn't really have a name so I'll just show you: I have a rock garden. Last week three of them died.
This is the easiest of all the fades in my opinion, especially when you have a long sig that you don't want to worry about centering the fade on. Just pick what colors you want it faded... this one is red and orange, so I started with the tag FF4400 and went to FFAA00, then went back to FF4400, then back to FFAA00, and so on until I got to the end. I'll show it to you in steps:

From FF4400 to FFAA00:
I have a rock garden. Last week three of them died.

Got to FFAA00, so now I go back to FF4400.
I have a rock garden. Last week three of them died.

Reached FF4400 again.. now I go back to FFAA00.
I have a rock garde
n. Last week three of them died.

Back to.. well, I think you get the idea! It doesn't have to end at any one place, doesn't take any counting of the letters, all you have to do is go back and forth between two colors. Just make sure that the two tags are far enough apart so that you can actually tell there's a fade, but close enough together that you can do it over a few times.

One last fade you can do is a vertical fade. Let's say you have the sig:
Follow your dream! Unless it's the one where you're at work
in your underwear during a fire drill.
I have a rock garden. Last week three of them died.
I'm going to be more assertive....if that's OK with you.
9 out of 10 voices in my head agree that I'm sane!
Once you get a mouthful of hot coffee,
whatever you do next is going to be wrong.
I have an irrational fear of hornets. They can fly and I can't, and that's just not fair...

It's a quick way to give a sig a bit more style, even if it doesn't look as fancy as a left to right fade.

Hex Code Simplification :D by Icky.

Having a hard time doing a fade from f69843 to 7842d8? Try simplifying (sp?) the code a bit.

Like some of us know, hex codes are divided in 3 parts:
XxYyZz

The Xx symbolizes the amount of RED that you want in the color.
The Yy symbolizes the amount of GREEN that you want in the color.
The Zz symbolizes the amount of BLUE that you want in the color.

(NOTE: NOTICE THAT I PUTTED THE SECOND "x" "y" & "z" (which obviously, can symbolize any number) IN EACH PART AS A lower case. I did this because that part of the hex code, has almost NO IMPORTANCE, SO IT SHOULDN´T MAKE FADING MORE COMPLICATED.

As an example, when youre fading f7b9a5 to d9b5c3, try to round up the code for the fade to have double digits. (Example: Instead fab9c3, use ffbbaa, remember that only the FIRST DIGIT of every part of the hex code is important) This makes fading MUCH easier.

Once you round up this hex code (f7b9a5 to d9b5c3) code for it to have double digits, the code should be like this (in this case): ffbbaa to ddbbcc.

Test it if you want, and you´ll notice that it´s the same color. (Im adding a bit of glow for the color to be visible)

How to make ASCII 2!

Since the other tutorial about how to make ASCII was accidentally deleted, I am re-making it.

Basics:

Here are the basic codes I use for making ASCII.
I use the font Lucida console(ex. ]lucida console] *ASCII Here!* [/fo[/color]nt] ), I always center mine(ex. *ASCII Here!* ), and I always make my ASCII size one. (ex. *ASCII Here!* )

Programs to use:

I use any typing program I can find that has the option to center, a font size option, and a font option. Like MS word.

How to make the ASCII!

Start in the program of your choice and make a plot.

Here is my plot:

Circles are some what hard to make to the new makers of ASCII. I would just practice on a plot with big and little circles. Lets go on and make the res of my name Im going to alternate cases, so it will look like MaYhEm.

How to make more difficult ASCII

Once again, start with a basic plot. Im starting with 13 lines so I can see the limit of lines I can use.

Lets make the word "OoZaRu", One of my other many names I like to use. Again starting with the O.

Since they're colored so you can see what they look like, some of the codes can be a bit hard to read.. to compensate for this, I put the code again in black on the right. Keep in mind that these can be tweaked as you see fit.. you can reverse them (red to black instead of black to red), only use parts, change the codes (e.g. 100000 to 110000) slightly for your ease.. simply a base guide!

Interactive/Hidden Messages

Step 1 -- The ASCII
Make the word you want to appear in ASCII. This is usually easier to do in a word processing program (like Microsoft Word, Notepad, etc.)... Use any symbol you want for the background, I prefer ='s in this case, and another symbol for the actual letters. You won't have it colored at this point, you so need some way to tell the letters and background apart!

For instance:

Using a font like Lucida Console helps because then all the characters are the same size and it'll line up, as oppose to:

See how the middle line is a different length? Well, that's more into ASCII than you need to know for this, but it's handy nonetheless. If you wish to make something fancier, check out Mayhem's ASCII tutorial in this very thread.

Step 2 - The Coloring
When you get that done, color all of the background (the ='s in this case) dark blue with the tag ='s here. An easy way to do this is to is to go into Microsoft Word (or anything with find and replace). Copy your ASCII, and type into the find field =. Type into the replace field =. This will put color tags around every =. But you don't need to start a new tag EVERY time there's another =, do you? That's a waste of character space. It's much better to put ====[/color] around the four ='s in a row. So what's an easy way to fix this? Go back to your find and replace bar. Type =[/color][color=000090] into the find bar. This will find all the ='s with a color tag directly after it. Since there's a color tag in front of it as well, we can just get rid of all that extra tag stuff. For the replace option, simply type in =. If you look, you will see there are no more extra tags. Okay! So we've colored our background, but that doesn't get the effect we're going for.

Step 3 -- Matching Characters
In order to make the message invisible, all the characters in the signature have to match. Obviously the #'s will give it away! Go back into find and replace. Type in # into the find field, and = into the replace field. Now everything is ='s.

Step 4 -- The Trick
Okay, but we still have some as dark blue and the rest as black. What's the point? Now here's the trick to this signature -- when you make something a link, it turns everything dark blue (the hex code 000090 to be exact, but I'll just call it dark blue) unless you specify another color. It's like text naturally being black unless you put a color tag around it, except now it's darkblue. When you hover over it, the default color becomes red, meaning everything that doesn't have a color tag will become red. Doesn't that look so much nicer? None of those tags are strictly necessary, but they do make it look much better IMO. You can play with glow colors and strengths, or make it bigger if you have the room. I also like to put text above and below mine, telling people to hover over it and stating where the link goes (I used gamewinners.com in my above example) along with a quote or two to round things out. You can also add a fancy font if you like -- the sky's the limit!:D
