I'd say I like The Hobbit the best because that was the first book from the Middle-Earth series that I read, and now I'm hooked. Other than that, I'd go from Return of the King, The Two Towers, andThe Fellowship of the Ring. I still need to read The Silmarillion and those other books. How many books are there exactly that deal with this series? I counted 12.

There are more than 4 but they aren't in the LoTR series. They just deal with middle earth also. The ones I know of are as follows:
The Hobbit
The Fellowship of The Ring
The Two Towers
The Retun of the King
The silmarillion
Unfinished Tales
The Book of Lost Tales, Part I
The Book of Lost Tales, Part II
The Lays of Beleriand
The Shaping of Middle-earth
The Lost Road and other writings
The Return of the Shadow
The Treason of Isengard
The War of the Ring
Sauron Defeated
Morgoth's Ring
The War of the Jewels
The Peoples of Middle-earth

There are other books about Tolkien himself too.

there is also a book (not by tolkien) that goes very in depth about almost every creature in tolkien's books from middle earth.

it is called Characters From Tolkien and it is by David Day.

the silmarillion is best of all middle earth but for your choices it would have to be The Return of the King

the hobbit seems more a children tale, the lord of the rings trilogy is harder, an epic tale.
i can't choose one.

The Return Of The King and The Hobbit...

November 20th, 2003, 05:41 PM
I'll have to say Return of the King. THe battles in this book are pretty well described. When I read the Return of the King, you could totally feel like you're reading the Revelations in the bible. The battle of Pelenor Fields and the battle before the black gate of Mordor totally rocks. All the drama. It 's like the host of Gondor, Rohan, Dol Amroth and the Dunedain are saying " we are ready to die so we can buy some time for some little hobbit that we don't really know to toss a ring into a volcano.

I like the silmarillion best, it has so much more stories, the fellowship of the ring is next, but the return of the king comes real close, then the two towers, and at last the hobbit, because it was kind of childish. But the story itself was great.

Fellowship and 2 towers just dragged on forever...

Eep! I can't believe Two Towers is beating out Fellowship! I mean, all TT really was was "There was a battle Frodo and Sam are tired and hungary. There was another battle. Frodo and Sam are REALLY tired and hungary." Well, in Fellowship it did take them FOREVER to get out of the Shire, but still...

Tom Morello
June 10th, 2004, 01:25 AM
I would say its a tie between Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales.

On second thought Silmarillion is better than Unfinished Tales. Both are excellent books but ya just cant beat the Silmarillion

Tom Morello
June 12th, 2004, 08:28 PM
Out of those i liked The Two Towers because of the battle at Helm's Deep. That was a a sweet battle. But out of all the Tolkien books I like Silmarillion the best. It has the best battles and the best characters.

My vote goes for the Hobbit... because that's where it all began.

According to a rare interview I saw recorded with Tolkein before he died, he was some student papers on night when he suddenly had an idea...so he turned a paper over and wrote..."In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit." How's that for an epipheny?

actually lotr is one whole book, the publishers thought it would be easier to seperate them when they were published and J.R.R. Tolkien wasnt too happy about it either.I hate when people do that. The book is not a trilogy and neither was the movie. Its just easier and shorter to seperate them the way they did, thats all.My favorite,by the way,is lotr.

Actually, LotR is 6 books combined into 1 volume (or 3 considering which way you look at it).

TTT was my favorite. FotR would be good if the Council of Elrond didn't take so long and if Frodo and Sam didn't spend so much time trying to get out of the Shire. RotK is pretty good except for the fact that nothing happens for the last 100 pages. Although, the Silmarillion beats everything. That should be a choice up there since there are a lot of people who would choose that over the other books.

Um......question!How can LOTR be 6 books?or even e for that matter?I watched this show on Tolkien and his publisher at the time even stated that he ( J.R.R Tolkien) even wrote LOTR as one whole book and not 3 or 6 seperate books. Now,since you want to get technical on me ( and by all means you are intitled to your own opinion as am I.I am not knocking that only disagreeing w/you.btw.) ,then we will get technical, you can put The Hobbit as the first actual book to LOTR.Seeing as how it started with Hobbits haveing come into possesion of the ring in the first place.I do agree with you on the fact that the Silmarillion is a very good book,in its own right, anyways.:argue:

Well does LOTR have a big dragon covered in millions of dollars/pounds in gold and gems? I don't think so. :P

the balrog would win

Ants!
May 18th, 2006, 09:44 PM
Tough call, but I think that the dragon would lose because, as powerful as it is, it is just a creature, whereas Balrogs share an origin with the Maiar, who are like gods or demi-gods. Plus, they were made by Iluvatar while the dragons were made by Melkor, who is also a creation of Iluvatar.

Tokito's Girl
May 19th, 2006, 12:13 PM
I would have to agree with Kut and Ants on this one. Dragons may be old but the Balrog is the oldest thing to inhabit ME and it was easier to take out the dragon then it was the Balrog. The Balrog is of an evil that hasnt been seen in a good long while. Not to mention that the Balrog is way more persistent than that of the dragon.

Ants!
May 19th, 2006, 02:20 PM
Plus, there have been times where a person would kill a dragon and survive, like Turin (he did die afterwards, but from suicide so it doesn't count), and Bard from The Hobbit who only had to shoot a single arrow. Balrogs on the other hand have never been killed without the person who slew them also dying in the effort, such as Ecthelion, Glorfindel (the first one), and even Gandalf. It's possible that it might have happened that a Balrog might have been killed without managing to kill the one who dealt them the death blow in return during the final battle between Morgoth and the host from the West, as it says something like "All the Balrogs were either destroyed or ran far away and hid in the depths of the earth". Plus, Balrogs manage to drive off and I think even injure Ungoliant, who was powerful enough to have Melkor completely at her mercy.
